Spotlight on Gearing Elementary
Wagons of Love
For the 12th year in a row, the third grade classes at Gearing Elementary collected food for their annual Wagons of Love community service project. They collected canned goods and non-perishable items in wagons and pulled the food to the St. Clair Ecumenical Pantry. The students then weighed and sorted the food and then stocked the shelves themselves. Approximately 800 pounds of food was collected to help feed local families this holiday season. Way to go Gearing third graders!
Workout Wednesdays at Gearing
It’s a school wide workout at Gearing on Wednesday mornings and the Gator Dome is rocking! We are promoting fitness and all the benefits that come with that package. A fit student will perform better academically. Classrooms take turns hula hooping in the hall and jump roping in the gym so that everyone gets a turn. The rest of our gators are in their classrooms doing the exercise/dance of the day to music over the PA. It is two songs of upbeat, snappy music to motivate and inspire them to kick it up a notch and improve their fitness level. There have also been sightings of Mr. Russell and the staff partaking in the activities, setting a positive example for our students that exercise is for everyone. Lots of happy, juicy and fit students at the Gator Dome!!!

COLD WEATHER SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS
- Slow down! This is a good rule of thumb in any winter driving situation, but it's especially important driving near school zones and buses. Driving on ice will mean less time to slow down and stop for students or other vehicles.
- Turn headlights on. It may be more difficult to see students in snowstorms or cloudy weather.
- Pay attention. Again, another good rule for any season, but especially important in winter. Don't use your phone or change the radio, but keep your eyes on the road at all times.
- Don't follow too closely behind the school bus making student stops.
- Don't disregard the red flashing signals when following or facing a school bus. It is illegal and dangerous to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing.

TIP OF THE WEEK FROM NEIMAN'S FAMILY MARKET
MyPlate Snowman Scene
Directions
- Make a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Then, cut out a snowman from the center.*
- Cut snowflakes from the cheese slices.* (Tip: Don’t have a snowflake cookie cutter? Use a plain circle and create snowballs instead!)
- Now let’s create the scene! Move your snowman to the plate and give him a face, hat, buttons, and arms. If it’s cold outside, he may need a scarf too.
- Add a background by covering the ground in “snow” and planting “trees.”
- Let it snow! Add cheese snowflakes or snowballs to complete the scene on your plate.
- Have fun and make it your own. Try orange or yellow low-fat cheese to add stars or a sun to the sky. Plant extra trees, build a house, or make a snowman family!
*Note: Enjoy leftovers from the sandwich or snowflakes as a snack or refrigerate and save for later.
