The Pika Effect
Like the butterfly effect, except more severe.
Climate Change
This is a regional change of temperature and climate. This can effect snow sticking to the ground, weather, water levels, and will ultimately decide the fate of the world. Considering many creatures are suffering right now, it won't be long before we will to. This is a world wide issue where no one goes unaffected if something dies of.
The Creature of the Cold
Climate change has been effecting several animals, but this one hits close to home. The West Coast Pika, has been dying off rapidly. These small, fuzzy creatures can overheat in temperatures of 78 degrees alone and the sad thing is, that's not even the highest temperature. Retreating from there once peaceful place all over the country, they've slowly faded to states like Oregon, California, Washington, New Mexico, some places in west Canada, and other regions with higher altitudes
Rejection Stings
Oregonwild talks about how the animal went up for the protection of endangered animals, yet they were rejected with the reasoning that they could survive in a larger range of temperatures than thought before.
Now You See them, Soon You Won't
The Pika population is dropping rapidly, and while they look cute, they have disappeared from entire areas due to the relentless heat. Not to mention in the heat is predicted to rise 4.5 to 14.4 degrees according to the NWF (National Wildlife Federation)
Stuck!
The WWF believes this little creature might be the first mammal victim to climate change. The American Pika can't move north easily, since their habitats are scattered in distant mountain ranges.
Save the Race
Takepart and several other organizations know the consequences of losing the Pika. It's pray to many animals, and without a food source they too will begin to diminish. This cute little cousin to the bunny dies if it's core temp. raises above 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
Melting Away
The snow is the American Pika's habitat, but with global warming, the snow is all melting away. The snow pack is what makes up there den and keeps them insulated. Without the snow - believe it or not - they will freeze to death. This is a serious problem if we don't get our act together and quit polluting the sky with all of our pollutants and debris.
