Big picture

I Love To Read Activities

Week 1 and 2 (February 1st-11th): BOOKMARK CHALLENGE

This has been a favorite activity over the year so we will start with it! Students can pick up a form with a bookmark template to design/decorate/color. The winners will be used as Due Date bookmarks at book check-out for the rest of the school year!

Week 2 (February 7th-11th): STORY QUILT

Students will get one square and make a visual representation of their favorite book. All the quilt pieces will be put together to make a paper quilt. We hope to make "classroom quilts" or maybe a few "school quilts", depending on how many quilt squares we receive.

Friday, February 11th: COZY READING DRESS UP DAY

Everyone can wear their favorite comfy clothes/pajamas/bunny slippers, or whatever they wear to cozy up and read!

Week 3 (February 14th-18th): READ CANADIAN AUTHORS

There will be a great selection of books on display in the library by Canadian authors that teachers and students can check out. There is also a Collection in Destiny Discover called "Canadian Authors" so anyone can peruse the titles. (Reminder to parents that you can access library book search from our school's website if you want to help your child to find a Canadian book to read!).

Week 4 (February 22nd-28th): DESTINY DISCOVER

There will be a Destiny Discover Scavenger Hunt! Destiny Discover chromebooks will be set up in the library so that students can use them during their library period to "scavenger hunt" for books.

Activities All Month:

"WE READ TOO! CAN YOU GUESS WHO?"

Pictures of favorite books and staff members will be on bulletin boards - can you match the book with the staff person?

"I LOVE MY LIBRARY BECAUSE..."

There will be heart shaped cutouts available in the library for students to take and fill out/color/cut out and return to the library to display.

TOP READER PRIZES

There will be prizes awarded for top readers in each homeroom! This will continue for the whole month, and will be tracked by the library.

TumbleBooks!

HSD is pleased to announce that we have extended our partnership with TumbleBooks for the remainder of the school year. Our current license agreement allows for full access to their K-6 library of books.

Basketball Games Are Streamed

At this time, we are not allowed to have any spectators at our basketball games. But the good news is that every game is streamed! The link to the game will be on the Host School's website (if the game is at Clearspring Middle School, you would go to cms.hsd.ca and click on the game link there, for example). Cheer on your child from the comfort of home!

Do you have a spoon or fork?

This is a question that we hear a lot! Students bring items in their lunch that need a fork or spoon to eat. Spoons and forks add up in price when you are supplying many children several times a week. Please remember to send whatever items your child needs to eat their lunch.

Can I borrow a water bottle?

This is another question we get a lot! It is inconvenient that we do not have access to water fountains and that students need something to fill at the water filling stations that are available. Unfortunately we do not have water bottles to provide students when they decide they are thirsty and they realize they have nothing to drink out of. Please make sure that your child brings a water bottle along to school so that they can stay hydrated during the day.

Talking about lunch...

Are you new to Canada and like to meet new people? Then come and join our lunch club! Or have you lived in Canada for a while now (or perhaps your whole life?) and are wanting to meet people from different countries and cultures? Then come and join us as we play games and get to know one another!

The newcomer lunch club is for everyone. Groups (in Cohorts) will meet Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays with Rene Shulz from SWIS (Settlement Workers In Schools).

Black History Month

Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honor the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities.

The 2022 theme for Black History Month is: “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” which focuses on recognizing the daily contributions that Black Canadians make to Canada.

No matter where you live, we invite all Canadians to learn more about these communities, and how they continue to help shape the story of Canada.

D.A.R.E.

We are privileged to have Constable Redikop from Steinbach RCMP here to teach the DARE program to our Grade 6's. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (stylized as D.A.R.E.) is an education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled drugs, membership in gangs, and violent behavior.
