NIS Weekly News
Nantucket Intermediate School - June 7, 2021
Sunny June Days...
Dear NIS families,
2021 MCAS is in the books for NIS! Our students were amazing in all the ways they demonstrated their perseverence and stamina! This was truly a baseline experience for our third and fourth graders as they've never taken it before. Our fifth graders took the science MCAS for the first time this school year and won't take that particular test again until grade 8. Parents will all receive MCAS results likely in the fall. We will use the results as we engage in thoughtful curriculum planning and solidify ways to meet the various learning needs of all our students.
With the warmer weather and COVID restrictions lifting across the island our students are able to engage in several on island field trips. Please be sure to read all communications from our classroom teachers so that you are in the know about the where and the when for your children. Fifth grade parents should also be on the lookout for communications from teachers/the team about end of year student activities celebrating our students' time at NIS.
Speaking of fifth grade, Mr. Horton had the opportunity to come visit all fifth grade classrooms today and last week. He shared pictures of the middle school spaces, shared middle school highlights, and answered the students' questions about CPS...lockers and phones included! He even mentioned a September trip for the 6th grade class to Nature's Classroom. Fingers crossed this trip will come to fruition!
Wishing you a great week!
Evemarie McNeil, Principal & Donna Johnson, Assistant Principal

Nantucket High School Musical
NHS has done a virtual performance of the musical Honk! This is the musical version of the Ugly Duckling! It is a heartwarming story of acceptance. Since singing indoors without a mask is not allowed, we have created for you a "staged" version, with costumes and microphones, high lighting the amazing cast of this very special show.
We will be streaming the performance on Sunday, June 6th, and Monday, June 7th at 7 pm. I am including the link to access the performances. You will need to purchase a "ticket" from this link, and you will receive a code in order to stream.
https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/54308
The cost of each ticket is $5 with an additional $2.72 fee for the streaming. The proceeds from the ticket sales enable us to continue to do performances each year.
Thank you for your support!
Erin MacIver, and the Fabulous Cast of Honk!
Healthy Bodies Support Healthy Minds
We know that children's birthdays are special and that they want to share their special day with the class. This year especially, and going forward students should not bring in food items to share with the class (cupcakes, cookies, chips etc.). Most of you have been so supportive with adhering to this change in support of healthy student bodies.
If your child desires to share something with classmates for their birthday consider any one of the following: special pencils, stickers, painted shell or drawing(s). Another idea is to purchase a book for the classroom or school library in honor of your child's birthday. This is a lasting way to celebrate!
Important Student Drop Off Information
Students are to be dropped off for school using the entrance off of Backus lane only. Using the surfside road entrance poses a safety issue for students, therefore should not be used in the morning to drop students off.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
