Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 3rd February 2017
year 6 scientists
This week Year Six have been looking at what is in blood and what the different things do.
We have made 'models' of blood using red cheerios for red blood cells, yellow water for plasma, oats for platelets and our favourite...marshmallows for white blood cells!
a busy thursday for year one
Year 1 were delighted to see so many parents and carers at their Welcome Worship on Thursday morning when they thought about making the right choices. No sooner had they said goodbye to them and had their Read Write Inc session, than another visitor came along to see them. PCSO Taylor comes into school every now and then and we are always pleased when she can share her expertise. For the Year 1 class, she talked with them about 'stranger danger'. Perhaps this could be a reminder to all parents to have another talk with your children about making the right choices.
adios Señorita Gomez
Señorita Gomez is a trainee teacher from Spain who has been with us for almost four months. We are sure Celia will go on to become an excellent teacher and we are very sad to be saying goodbye to her today.
Our partnership with the university in Segovia continues this year and we hope to welcome another trainee teacher to join us in February or March. We are looking for a family with a spare room who would be willing to host the student. The willing family could specify a male or female student. It is an excellent opportunity for your children to improve their Spanish and learn about a different culture. They would pay towards their accommodation costs up to £200 per month and are expected to contribute to the household for example cleaning, cooking or babysitting. The school depends on host families for this project to continue. If you would like more information please pop into the school office or see Mrs Binks.
books and reports
Your child should come home today with their books and a Spring term report. We hope you find these informative and that they will help you to form questions or thoughts ahead of the forthcoming parent meetings. Please take the time to sit with your child or children and share the books with them. It shows them that you really value school and their learning. If you have any comments about the books please complete the sheet which is enclosed in the folder. We must ask that books are returned on Monday morning as lessons will continue a pace next week.
We are proud that as a primary school we send books home, offer a termly report and 20 minute appointment slots. We do this because we know parents are key to children's success in school and we want to work with you. Please help us by making an appointment with the class teacher.
parent information opportunities
Friday 10th February - school is closed for pupils so that we can have another successful day of parent-teacher appointments. All teachers are also offering some after school appointments on other days if you cannot make the Friday. The online booking system is now closed, so if you have not yet made an appointment, please see the class teacher.
Thursday 2nd March - to coincide with World Book Day, Mrs McCormick will be running an English workshop which will feature a chance to go into classes. This will be during the day so, as well as learning more to support your child's learning, you will also get the opportunity to experience all those World Book Day costumes!
Thursday 9th March - Miss Hardy will run a Mathematics workshop - details to follow.
safer internet day
PCSO Taylor has also talked with older classes about internet safety, and Tuesday 7th February is Safer Internet Day (SID). This is a global event where schools and other organisations promote the safe use of the internet. The focus of SID 2017 is ‘Be the change. Unite for a better internet’.
It is important as a parent/carer that you support your child in the online world. This can be difficult with the rapid development of technology and the emergence of new Apps. We strongly recommend you click here to learn more.

Sign2Sing
We are looking forward to taking part in 'Sign2Sing' next week - this is an annual event organised by the deaf health charity Sign Health, which raises essential funds to help vulnerable deaf children and adults. The children have been enjoying learning some songs using sign language, and on Tuesday 7th February we will be having a deaf awareness day, which will end with a short concert for friends and family in the school hall, at 2:50pm. Please do come along to see the children perform - no tickets will be required, but as you arrive we will ask for a donation towards the work of the charity. If you'd like to find out a bit more about the charity, please follow this link www.sign2sing.org.uk
library and weekly reading news
It is brilliant to see the library being used throughout the week. Here the Year 6 librarians are reading to the younger children. The library is open on Thursday and Friday lunch times for all to enjoy. Any questions see our amazing Year 6 librarians, or Mrs Baker or Mrs McCormick.
Congratulations Year 6, winners of the reading raffle yet again with 94% of children reading 5 or more times (as noted in their reading record and signed by a parent or carer). Congratulations to Year 4 who have made a fantastic increase to 93%. We're still asking, which class will be the first to 100%?
parking information
It would also help us to keep all the children safe, if everyone walking into the school yard uses the gate and path beside the main entrance so they do not have to cross the car park with children.
Thank you for helping us to keep our children safe.

friends of ripon cathedral primary
Please have a look through lost property in the spare classroom and claim any lost pieces of uniform before Friday 10th February. The Friends will have all lost property out in the playground from 3pm on Thursday 9th February, where you can have a sort through to see if you have anything unclaimed. Any unclaimed uniform will then go into the 'Bags for School' to raise funds for the school. Thank you.
