CFES 4th Grade Updates
Dear CFES 4th Grade Families,
Greetings! We're so proud of this group of students. We completed the Math and Reading Interim assessments!! Students practiced using digital tools, demonstrated how to show their thinking in writing, and learned how it felt to build stamina through a longer assessment. WE ARE PROUD!! Please ask your child to share with you what went well for them. Many of them shared that they felt prepared and confident. Yes, there were a few challenging concepts that will come later this year in our curriculum. I'm sure they can share a few examples of some tricky questions where they had to problem-solve. Overall, it was a GREAT week!!
Next week should be fairly normal... Let's enjoy a solid two weeks as we close out the third nine weeks and prepare for Spring Break.
Parents, please see the Parent Trail guide from Mrs. Trammel with details regarding the Change of Learning environment. If you plan to change, please be aware of the deadline next week.
Please be sure your student remembers to bring his/her water bottle and headphones or earbuds to school every day to refill at the filtered water stations.
Our CFES Great Expectations focus this week will be:
Life Principle: forgiveness - the act of excusing a mistake or offense
Quote: "To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it."--Confucius
Creekside Forest Creed
I am proud to be a Creekside Forest Cougar.
I come to school each day respecting my teachers,
my classmates, and myself.
I am responsible for my choices and their results.
I care for others with all my heart.
Never quitting is my #1 tool;
I am a leader at the #1 school.
Go CREEKSIDE!
Please be encouraged to discuss with your child what the CFES Creed and weekly quote and life principle means to them and help make life connections to reinforce.

DONATIONS TO THE TOMBALL ABANDONED ANIMAL RESCUE
We are celebrating reading Fenway and Hattie by bringing a donation for a local animal shelter. Between February 16th and March 5, Ms. Hock will have a box available outside the school and inside the Library for items to benefit our furry friends at AAR. Please check the list of things they use, because their rescues eat particular brands of food and treats, but they also need supplies such as paper towels and trash bags. Thank you! AAR donation list
Math & Science Updates
Math and Science Resources:
Students have access to a variety of resources through Clever including Education Galaxy, IXL, Flocabulary, and their online math/science textbooks. These are great resources for practicing all fourth grade skills! Practice basic multiplication/division fact fluency regularly.
Math:
We are continuing our measurement unit in math. Students will learn to use a measurement reference chart to compare and convert units of measure.
Students will:
- order units with the customary measurement system from smallest to largest unit or largest to smallest
- select appropriate units to measure length, weight, and liquid volume
- use information in a table to convert measures from smaller to larger units or from larger to smaller units
- use patterns to extend or complete tables showing measurement conversions
Ways to help at home:
Collect containers that are labeled in metric units. Ask your child to convert the metric units to another unit. As an alternative, you might ask questions such as, “Does the bottle hold more than or less than 1 liter?”
Measure rooms in your house to the nearest meter. Make a list of the measures by room. Then show the measures, in centimeters, to your child. Ask your child to match the centimeter measure to the rooms measured to the nearest meter.
Gather a variety of plastic containers labeled with units of customary capacity (milk or juice containers, ice cream, yogurt, sour cream cartons). Discuss the capacity relationship between the containers. Verify by pouring water from one container to another.
Have your child estimate how many cups of milk your family needs for one week and convert the amount to quarts and/or gallons. Let your child determine how much milk to buy at the grocery store.
Science:
We are studying Earth's patterns of change, including seasons, shadows, and the observable appearance of the Moon. We will begin with learning about how the Earth moves (rotation and revolution) and how that creates patterns of day/night, seasons, and shadows.
Vocabulary: Sun, Earth, Moon, axis, orbit, moon phases, new moon, first quarter, third quarter, full moon, waxing, waning, last quarter, crescent, gibbous, increasing, decreasing, revolution, rotation, tilt, direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, shadow, gravity, sundial, angle
Language Arts & Social Studies Updates
Reading: We will be reviewing our unit on Non-Fiction. We will recap text features, main idea, details, text structures, and elements on Non-Fiction. On Friday, students will be assessed through the district CBA. If you'd like to review, encourage your child to get on Education Galaxy to practice their skills at home, or read a Non-Fiction piece at home (newspaper, magazine, article, recipe, etc.)
Writing: We will jump back in to expository writing, thinking of rich details using How and Why Cafe and six W's. In grammar, we will be learning all about homophones and applying them to our writing. Lastly, we are hitting the ground running with revise/editing. The kids are rocking this skill, and we will continue to practice, practice, practice to find those mistakes and improve writing.
Vocabulary:
Unit 10 test- Students can study for unit 10 with this study guide. The test will be March 11th.
Handwriting:
Assignments will be found online and students will work in their blue cursive books. We'll work on a few skills per week.
Students may practice at home as well. Cursive is a beautiful skill to learn and become proficient in. It also assists students in READING cursive writing as well.
Social Studies: Unit 6: We'll begin the week with a reading passage about the new state of Texas. Later in the week, we'll learn about the Texas frontier and economic resources, before students begin a major grade 1-Page assignment. This will be a project that will be due the following week. More info to come!
