Departments implement SMART Goals

The English Department, along with the other departments at SHS, under the direction of Principal Murphy have created SMART goals to do individual action research projects on ways to improve test scores and graduation rates. English is looking at Close Reading Strategies and techniques to improve the comprehension of literature texts. Because of the new standards emphasis on text-dependent questions, rigor and text complexity, all four English teachers spent nine weeks using their classrooms as experimental laboratories. So far, they have found that most student benefit, there is no negative impact on ENL populations and 63-80% of the students have increased comprehension scores. The department plans to continue using the strategies with more students and to accent those activities which have the most impact.

Southridge Choirs

The SHS choirs are off to a great start this semester as we prepare for many events! The musical cast is busy rehearsing for “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and is having fun putting the musical comedy together. The performances will be February 26, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. Concert Choir is preparing for their trip to and performance in New York City while Girls’ Choir and Mixed Choir are rehearsing for Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Three SHS Choir students were selected to the Indiana All State Choir and will perform with approximately 250 other Indiana choral students in concert on Saturday, January 17 in Fort Wayne. The students were selected through audition in September. This event is held in conjunction with the Indiana Music Educators Association’s annual convention. Best wishes to Ryan Hill, Katie Kendall and Courtney Jones for an excellent experience!

We will host the ISSMA district Vocal/Piano Solo and Ensemble contest at the Southridge complex on Saturday, February 7. Twenty-three area schools will participate in this festival. A HUGE THANK YOU to the choir parents who are working at this contest! Best of luck to all SHS and SMS students who are playing piano solos, singing vocal solos or singing in an ensemble.
