It's county seat is located in Newland, here the government is here for the County! With Newland having a population of only 698, we make up for it in talented government officials! Our Board of Commissioners has five members that work to keep us safe and our future bright! The commissioners jobs are to make ordinances, approve budget, levy taxes, as well as tackling topics of Education, Senior Services, Soil and Water, Agriculture, elections, and making Avery a great place for everyone! Our county manager is Philip Barrier, and he works to make sure this whole system in Avery County runs smoothly. He oversees county operations to make sure everything runs smoothly. They are each voted in staggered and hold office for 2 years. A picture of our Chairperson of the Board can be found on the left, our county seat in the center, and our County Manager on the right.

How else does Newland impact Avery County as a whole?

Our county seat was named after former Lt. Governor, William C. Newland. Our Town manager, Keith Holiman, has several jobs to keep this county working together. Hired by the Board of Aldermen, he comes up with the budget, carries out the county's polices, while making sure everything runs smoothly. His picture is on the left. The aldermen are responsible for writing ordinances for the town. There are 4 of them on the board serving 4 years with staggered elections. Our Mayor who is the face of this beautiful town and is the one that breaks ground for marvelous buildings! Her name is Valerie Jaynes. She is pictured right. Newland is most known for the Avery County Courthouse. In 1912 construction on the Courthouse was finished and this is monumental in the fact that when it was finished the County seat of NewLand was founded!
