2017 Digital Learning Day
Bertie County Connecting through Digital Learning
Digital Learning Day is Thursday, February 23, 2017
What is it: Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It emphasizes high-quality instruction and provides access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career.
Why is it Important: With so many new types of digital devices, educational software and mobile apps continuously developed, it’s hard to keep up with the latest and greatest advancements in educational technology. Students are relying on their teachers to prepare them for this ever-changing world. Teachers will need to help students understand technology and how it can help them become better critical thinkers, communicators, creators, and collaborators. By doing so, students will be better equipped for their futures.
Expectations for Educators: NEW DIGITAL TEACHING & LEARNING COMPETENCIES
Incorporating digital learning into our classrooms is no longer a suggestion, but an expectation. House Bill 23 will make digital learning part of administrator and teacher evaluations. In 2017, the State Board of Education will implement digital teaching and learning competencies to improve leadership for digital learning and teaching practices. While the current North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards incorporate digital learning, the new competencies will clarify exactly what administrators and teachers should be doing to provide high-quality, digital learning experiences for their students.
