FFA District Competition
This past Saturday March 7th, seventeen Scottsburg FFA members headed to Springs Valley High School in French Lick for the 2015 District XI CDE Competition. This contest is held annually in each of the twelve Indiana FFA districts in order for members across the state to demonstrate their agricultural knowledge through CDEs, or Career Development Events.
Juniors Emily Pfaffenbach and Kailey Barrett participated in the Soil Management CDE with their slaking demonstration, showing the result of different crop field tilling practices and methods, and ways to prevent soil erosion in farmer’s fields. Their presentation earned them a 3rd place. Also receiving third place plaques were Sophomore Sara Edwards for her Chapter Scrapbook, and senior Bailey West for her digital Multimedia Scrapbook.
In the Exhibit CDE, junior Kevin Hardin and freshman Tessa Richey, created an exhibit to represent the 2015 FFA theme of ‘Go All Out’. The two were awarded 1st place and have the opportunity to participate at State in June with their exhibit. Tessa Richey also took home 1st place in her Freshman Prepared Public Speaking CDE over animal drugs and antibiotics, and will advance to State.
The Scottsburg FFA Quiz Bowl team received 1st place. Sophomores Sara Edwards and Danielle Wells and freshmen Christina Dunn and Emma Hall will be joining the other two Scottsburg FFA state qualifiers at Purdue University in June!
Parent-Teacher Conferences on March 17th
District Wide Student Council Event
On Tuesday, March 10, the SHS Student Council hosted a Leadership Workshop for members of the elementary and middle schools’ councils. There were about 20 students in attendance. The workshop helps to build leadership skills as well as to inform younger students about what the high school council does.
The Student Council Officers led the younger students in several icebreakers and activities, as well as explained more about the roles of a good council member. The activities were meant to foster positive communication, leadership and team building skills. After 2 hours of fun, the students were excited to learn new ideas to take back to their own councils.
