Calling Sailors Around the World
Lauren Delker and Alexis Rivers
Captain Ferdinand Magellan
I was born in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480. I spent most of my life studying mapmaking and navigation. I went to Queen Leonora's School of Pages in Lisbon. There, I studied heavily in navigation, astronomy, and cartography. When I was about 20 years old I started sailing in large groups and combat. This gave me great experience in sailing and navigation. I later on explored Malacca which is now present day Malaysia and helped in the conquest of Malacca's port. In 1517, I moved to Spain to make my skills available to the Spanish court. I began studying all types of navigation and Greek theologies. I believe that the Earth is round and I am determined to yet find a shorter route to the Spice Islands by sailing west.
