Principal's Message
Wolfpack families,
Typically I begin weekly messages by focusing on students, but this time I want to focus on a very special staff member. This week we learned that Mr. Austin Olson in our P.E. Department was selected as the California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (CAHPERD) Middle School State Teacher of the Year for all of California! This is a wonderful honor and a very deserved recognition for Coach Olson who serves with passion, creative thinking, and has helped evolve the PTMS program in such a positive way. Coach Olson and our entire PE department go to great lengths to physically engage students each day in creative and challenging ways, and also focus on social/emotional learning, healthy lifestyles, and citizenship. Coach Olson will be recognized next month at the state conference, and we are so lucky to have him on our team. We couldn't be prouder Coach Olson!
Speaking of recognition, today we honored 30 students in our wolfpack with "Trailblazer Awards". These students were recognized by a staff member for showing kindness, going above and beyond, and demonstrating positive character. As a reward they received a special treat during lunch. Way to go students!
"Oobleck" - is this a word you know? If not, feel free to do a quick Google search. You will find that it is simply corn starch and water. Cool, but what does that have to do with my student? As I visited classrooms this week, our 7th grade science classes were learning about states of matter (liquid, solid & gas) and I walked into a wonderfully messy demonstration of Oobleck where students had to consider whether it's a solid or liquid. I absolutely love the opportunities our teachers provide, even when learning gets a little messy. Our science 8 students are beginning their focus on force and inertia, while our students in Spanish classes are navigating the food unit while also learning commands and verb tenses. If your student is in one of our Spanish classes, challenge them to share what they are learning. At this point, most of the instruction is given in the target language of Spanish, which research shows reinforces and strengthens how quickly students learn and maintain their language.
Our Scholastic Book Fair was a hit this week, and thank you to Ms. Richards in our Learning Commons for facilitating this. Many students went home this week with new books, perhaps a poster or a fun trinket. Finding a book with which students can really connect reinforces a love of reading and can unlock a world of possibilities.
February is Black History Month and our staff take a number of steps both inside and outside of the classroom during this month and throughout the school year to honor and celebrate.
Finally, there's a lot of great energy on campus for our upcoming activities including our 5 vs. 5 soccer lunch league and our "Glow The Night Away" dance on February 16th. They are great opportunities for our wolfpack.
Have a relaxing weekend and see you Monday.
In gratitude,
Scott Wild
Principal
Counseling Update
Please take advantage of the SDUHSD Parent Education page. It is a “one stop shop” to sign up for any parent information sessions the district is offering, as well as recordings of many previous workshops that have been offered.
Our No Place For Hate student committee has been hard at work creating biography slides for Black History Month. These slides will be shown during Homeroom. It’s great to see our student leaders working together in their own time to create something positive on our campus.
Thank you to everyone who recently donated jigsaw puzzles for our Wellness Center. Our students are very grateful as they have plenty to keep them busy during break times!

High School Selection
High School Selection for current 8th graders will take place between January 30th and February 17th. Please click on this link for information.
The following Press Release has been sent out:
Who should submit a high school selection during the window?
1. Students currently attending SDUHSD District schools:
Current Grade 8 - All SDUHSD 8th grade students currently residing in the district must select a high school that they wish to attend in the fall of 2023.
Current Grades 9-11 - SDUHSD students currently attending a district high school who wish to change high schools must also make a selection.
SDUHSD high school students who do not wish to change and will remain at their current high schools for fall 2023 do not need to make any selections during high school selection and will automatically be re-enrolled in their current school.
2. Students who reside within District boundaries but do not currently attend SDUHSD schools:
Current Grades 8-11 students who reside within SDUHSD boundaries but who do not currently attend SDUHSD schools, including private and Rancho Santa Fe schools, must make a selection if they plan to attend a SDUHSD high school in the fall of 2023.
Students must currently reside within SDUHSD district boundaries to participate in high school selection. Students are only eligible to attend an Academy school if their primary residence is within the district boundaries and they are actually residing in that residence prior to the close of the selection at 4:00 pm on February 17, 2023.
It is the intent of the Board of Trustees to provide equitable educational opportunities for all students of the district. In order to maintain an equitable balance in the enrollment at each campus, the Board of Trustees established attendance boundaries for each school in SDUHSD. Boundaries of school attendance areas in the district are as follows:
1. La Costa Canyon High School (LCC) shall include the boundaries of the Encinitas and Cardiff school districts and the area north of Escondido Creek in Rancho Santa Fe district.
2. Torrey Pines High School (TP) shall include the boundaries of the Del Mar, Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe School Districts, with the exception of the area north of Escondido Creek in the Rancho Santa Fe School District.
3. San Dieguito High School Academy (SDHSA) and Canyon Crest Academy (CCA) shall be open to all district residents in grades 9-12 on an equal basis through the high school selection administrative regulation approved by the Board of Trustees. To be eligible to attend SDHSA or CCA, a student must have selected the school during the established high school selection window process.
Parents and students seeking additional information about each high school are invited to attend the high school information nights as listed below:
La Costa Canyon - Tuesday, January 24, 2023 6:00 pm
Torrey Pines - Wednesday, February 2, 2023 6:00 pm (Virtual)
