Voyager Family News
Week of October 19, 2020
Strand Spotlights and Info:
Dear Voyager Families,
- Our APEX Fundraiser enters its second and final week this week! We are encouraging our students to participate in the REMIX event on Friday at 1:30 PM "together," (but the asynchronous link can be accessed on PE GoogleClassroom any time that day). Coach JD has pledged to be PIED in the FACE on video if 75% of our students have ANY pledges. Please consider donating to our school and PTO through this motivating fundraiser!
- We will have an earthquake drill on Wednesday at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. BRIDGE students' teachers will prompt students to participate at home. Please take the opportunity to discuss earthquake safety at home, and see the earthquake drill section below for more information.
- Parent-Teacher Conferences: This year, to avoid significantly disrupting our current schedules, we will be holding fall parent-teacher conferences on three consecutive Fridays between 9:45AM and 3:15 PM in November (6, 13, and 20th). Zoom instruction on these Fridays will end early, at 9:30 AM, to accommodate conferences. Your child's teacher will be in contact soon to schedule conferences.
- Spirit Week coming up, October 26-30. PTO has planned a week of dress days! See the PTO section below for details and plan ahead!
- Your children’s health and safety are paramount, and we are following health and safety guidelines which will necessitate absences of both students and staff from our campus on occasion. We will do our best to notify you in advance when your child will have a substitute/guest teacher. Please read the COVID SYMPTOMS SCREENING AND GUIDANCE sections below for protocols if your child is sick/has symptoms.
- ANY student(s) wishing to lead the pledge for a future Friday Flagpole may email a video of him/herself to jennifer.moore@coronadousd.net.
- Please check CALENDAR UPDATES section for new dates/activities
- Please join our annual Book Character Pumpkin activity and consider donating to a local Girl Scout Troop's Halloween drive! See details in a section below.
In-Person Learning Updates:
- Please ensure your child brings a water bottle and snack to school each day; drinking fountains are not available for student use.
- Thank you for continuing to make arrival and dismissal so smooth and safe. Our students will continue to enter and exit through designated gates per grade level. Students may begin lining up at 7:50 AM/12:05 PM (avoid being earlier, please) and gates will open for students to enter campus and proceed to classrooms at 7:55 AM/12:10 PM.
- USE THE CROSSWALK ADJACENT TO STAFF PARKING LOT to walk your child to campus. PLEASE DO NOT WALK ACROSS THE CAR LINE.
- Family members, PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK INTO THE STAFF PARKING LOT TO DROP OFF 4TH/5TH GRADERS. Preschool families will use this area for dropoff/pickup.
- Please pick up students promptly at 10:45 in the AM and 3 PM in the afternoon.
- TK-1st graders will be dismissed directly to parents/guardians/family members. All other grades may be dropped off/picked up in the car line or reunite with family members/walk/bike to and from school independently.
- Students arriving late to school will enter through the office.
- Please do NOT send your child to school if he/she is exhibiting any symptoms. See section below for guidance and protocols.
- Students will not have a traditional recess on the playground, but will go outside for a snack and mask break and distanced socializing

Earthquake Drill
Procedure for Wednesday's Earthquake Drill:
Principal Moore will come on the loudspeaker at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. BRIDGE teachers will include their students at that time, or prompt them to participate at home at another time.
Ms. Moore will share the following message with students and staff:
Attention Voyager students and staff, it is time to begin our practice earthquake drill. Remember that we practice so that we are not scared, we are prepared! Please drop down to your knees in a safe place under a desk or table and away from windows and objects that can fall, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands, and keep your mouth and eyes closed, and remaining quiet and still. We will remain here and quiet for another minute to practice being safe during an earthquake

COVID Symptoms Screening and Guidance/Protocols
A Guide for Parents
ON ILLNESS AND POSITIVE TESTS FOR COVID-19 VIRUS
MY CHILD IS SICK OR TESTED POSITIVE. WHEN CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL?
SICK AND TESTS NEGATIVE FOR THE COVID-19 VIRUS
If your child gets sick and decides to get a COVID-19 test and the test is negative your child can return after the following:
1) It has been 72 hours from symptoms resolving and
2) You provide proof of the negative test results to the school site.
SICK AND DOES NOT TAKE A COVID-19 TEST
If your child gets sick and you or your healthcare provider decides not to have them get a test to determine if he/she has COVID, they may return when:
1) It is at least 10 days from their symptom onset and
2) They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and
3) Their symptoms are improving.
SICK AND/OR TESTS POSITIVE WITH THE COVID-19 VIRUS
If your child tests positive for COVID-19, he/she may return when:
1) It is at least 10 days from the onset of symptoms or the date they tested positive and
2) They are without a fever for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication and
3) Their symptoms are improving.
WHAT ACTIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE WHEN MY CHILD IS AT HOME SICK?
Families that have a sick child at home should do the following:
□ Stay home: Do not allow your child to leave your home, except to get medical care. As much as possible, others in the family should stay home. If ANYONE in the house tests positive for COVID-19, no one should leave the house.
□ Take care: Make sure they get rest and stay hydrated.
□ Stay in touch with your doctor: Call before seeking medical care for your child. For medical emergencies, call 911 and report your child’s COVID-19 diagnosis during call.
□ One point of contact: If at all possible, separate your child from other people and pets in your household. Try to have one person only care for your child, so others are not exposed.
□ Use a face covering: If your child is over 2 years old and can wear a face mask without finding it hard to breathe, have them wear one when the caregiver is in the room. Do not leave your child alone while they are wearing a face mask. The caregiver should also wear one when in the same room.
□ Separate bathroom use: Have your child use a separate bathroom from other people, if available. If that is not possible, clean and disinfect the bathroom often.
□ Monitor their symptoms: Symptoms of COVID-19 may include any or all of the following: fever, cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, new loss of taste/smell, headache, body aches, and/or poor appetite. □ Consult with your child’s healthcare provider for ways to monitor their symptoms.
□ Follow care instructions: If your doctor or local health department has provided specific instructions, follow these directives.
□ Wash hands often: Everyone in your family should wash their hands well and often.
□ Clean often: Use regular household cleaners or wipes to clean things that get touched often (doorknobs, light switches, toys, remote controls, phones, etc.)
A HOUSEHOLD MEMBER TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19. CAN I BRING MY CHILD TO SCHOOL?
No. If your child has had direct, close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes (with or without a mask), within 48 hours of the individual experiencing symptoms and/or testing positive, they must quarantine. Please consult with your school nurse to determine appropriate length of quarantine.
Silver Strand Partial Return to Campus Safe Arrival and Dismissal Plan
Help us keep everyone safe on their way to and from school! See diagram below, as well as Friday Flagpole video demonstrating arrival protocols here.
Students will follow dots and signs which will provide distance as well as directions to gates. We are limiting access to our front office and encourage business to be conducted via phone or email. Students who are late to school may report to the office if gates are closed. Family members of students in grades 1-5 are discouraged from escorting students up to gates to avoid crowding; TK and Kindergarten parents may escort to the kindergarten gate but not enter campus. Please drive and drop off efficiently in the drop-off lane with your child exiting the car at the curb (not street side). Please reserve parking spaces at the back of the staff lot and in front of school/neighborhood for families of TK/Kindergarten students.
- 4th and 5th graders will enter and exit campus through the gate at the lunch area through the staff parking lot and line up starting at 7:50 AM.
- 2nd and 3rd graders will enter and exit campus through the gate between Strand Hall and the office (to the left of the mosaic)
- 1st graders will enter and exit campus through the gate between the office and library.
- TK and Kindergarteners will enter campus through the gate west of the library and will be released first at dismissal.
6th Annual SSES Book Character Pumpkin Decorating!
Attention ALL Students!!
You are welcome to participate in a VIRTUAL family pumpkin decorating activity for all preschool through 5th graders! Guidelines are as follows:
1. The theme for this virtual activity is, “My Favorite Book Character." You may choose any character from any BOOK you have read or heard. It can be a Fiction or Nonfiction character.
2. Pumpkins can be real or plastic. They can be painted, colored, OR carved! Acrylic paints or permanent markers work best. Watercolors tend to run. Yarn, construction paper, pipe cleaners, cloth, wigs, old clothes, etc. may be used to decorate the pumpkin.
3. This can be done independently or as a family project!
4. Also, this year we have a NEW category!! Since it’s just days before a Presidential Election, we have added the category of: PRESIDENTIAL PUMPKIN! Here’s your chance to read and learn about one of the 45 Presidents that we have had in the United States of America. This option can be done “in addition to” OR “in place of” your book character pumpkin.
5. It is not mandatory, but suggested that you also display the book your character came from.
Since this is a virtual connection activity, when you submit your pumpkin picture it will need to include a 4x6 card stating the student/family name, grade level, teacher name, name of the book character (or President), and title of the book.
All pictures should be submitted to: Ms. Moore jennifer.moore@coronadousd.net
by Friday, October 23.
*Participation is completely voluntary*
Good luck, have fun, and happy decorating!

- Location: Multi-Purpose Rooms at VES (H Street, with the line forming along Green Field on 7th Street) and Silver Strand Elementary
- Distribution Time: 4:00PM-6:00PM (while supplies last)

Meal distribution will continue every Monday while students are in a distance learning environment. Starting Monday, August 31st, 5 days' worth of breakfast and lunch meals will be distributed to enrolled Coronado Unified students and based on the current meal eligibility (free/reduced/paid). Economic circumstances have changed for many families as a result of the pandemic. Families may turn in a meal application at any time during the school year. Applications must be filled out every year even if you qualified the prior school year. Click here to apply online for meal benefits. Meals may consist of packaged, refrigerated, and/or frozen items. Staff will start "Grab and Go Distribution" of meal bags at 4pm, and will stop once all bags are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
All meals will be distributed curb-side to decrease the risk of exposure. Parents/guardians will be asked the name of their student(s) and it will be entered into the cashier system to bring up the student's meal eligibility. The 5 meals for breakfast and lunch will be charged to the student's account at that time (see below for meal prices). All parts of the breakfast and lunch meals must be taken at the time of pick up. Please note that NO PAYMENTS will be taken during meal distribution. Payments must be made online through ezschoolpay.com or a check/cash can be dropped off to any school site office in the CNS drop deposit box.
- Free: $0
- Reduced: Breakfast = $.30; Lunch = $.40
- Weekly = $3.50/student
- Paid: Breakfast = $2.50; Lunch = $3.25 (Pre-k/Elementary) or $3.75 (MS/HS)
- Weekly Pre-k/Elementary = $28.75
- Weekly MS/HS = $31.25
Meal bags will be placed into automobile trunks, they will not be handed through the vehicle window for the protection of both our staff and vehicle occupants. Only those in cars will be served meals during this pick-up window, no walk-ups or bicycles are allowed in order to maintain social distancing protocols. If you are unable to pick-up meals by car or during the scheduled distribution time, please email Charity.Campbell@coronadousd.net on or before the Friday before pick-up, at noon, and we will schedule an alternative window to pick-up a meal.
Meals may not be distributed to students. Students who are receiving meals are encouraged to be physically present at the time of pick-up. However, requiring students to come to the meal site to pick up meals may not be practical and in keeping with the goal of providing meals while also taking appropriate safety measures. As such, meals may be distributed to a parent/guardian to take home to their student(s).
Our incredible Child Nutrition Service Department are prepared to serve meals weekly to over 830 children (8,300 meals in total). As demands increase, we will continue to increase the number of meals we prepare in order to accommodate the needs of our entire school community.

2-1-1 serves as a single access point for information, referrals, navigation, and ongoing care coordination for active-duty military, veterans, and their immediate families. They also answer the Courage to Call network, San Diego’s peer-to-peer talk and chat line.

Coronado Public Library Services
During these unprecedented times when children have had to switch to online activity sooner than expected, Coronado Public Library is making media literacy a priority. For starters, traditional library visits are transformed into virtual offerings, many of which are linked to from the online libraries that the children’s librarian has created especially for Coronado Unified School District’s elementary schools and preschools. The goal is to encourage young students to explore a safe and especially curated online environment.
