ARTS & COMMUNITY YOUTH PROGRAMS
A Transformative, Asset-based Approach to Development
A SYMPOSIUM WITHIN THE SIXTH ANNUAL
THE POINT, Host & Sponsor • South Bronx
Where Community and Creativity Connect
A nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx, the community at THE POINT works with its neighbors to celebrate the life and art of their community, an area traditionally defined solely in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools, and substandard housing. Their mission is to encourage the arts, local enterprise, responsible ecology, and self-investment in the Hunts Point community. In addition to literacy and traditional arts programs such as dance, music, visual arts, photography, and theatre, they also provide training in social and environmental justice, urban farming, culinary skills, and circus entertainment.

ABOUT THE DAY
This daylong symposium will focus on youth in residential treatment, including juvenile justice and community group home placements. The speakers will present the development and integration of expressive therapies, particularly music, performing arts, and art therapy as key components for the engagement and treatment of the youth, staff, and families. Examples and experientals will demonstrate how clinicians can capitalize on the engagement power of expressive arts therapies to blend and enhance more traditional forms of treatment within the residential milieu including Motivational Interviewing, DBT, Family Therapy, and Performance. The symposium will be hosted by a long-established community arts center for youth in the South Bronx, where the importance and the how to’s of utilizing Licensed Creative Arts Therapists as therapy partners integrating community art providers will be presented, detailing the multiple therapeutic windows opened by expressive therapies and performance.
