Stanwood Middle School

Family Update - March 27th, 2021

Good morning Stanwood Middle School Families!

***Please see Important Dates in the box below!***

As we mentioned last week, our 3rd Quarter ends on Monday , April 12th. This means Spring Conferences are coming up! At Stanwood Middle School they will be held the evening of Wednesday, March 31st 2:40 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., and the afternoon of Thursday, April 1st between 11:10 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. this year.

As we mentioned before, we have limited times this year for conferences, which is a change from our Spring Conferences of the past. Our teachers have been working hard to determine which students they feel are in need of conferences and will be reaching out to families this week. If you feel you need a conference with a teacher please reach of to them via email. Teacher emails are listed below.

You may see that your student has I/Incomplete listed as a grade in Skyward. This indicates that your student currently has earned between a 50% to a 59.9%. At the beginning of the year our District determined the grading scale for our secondary schools and this was included. We wanted to make sure you understand this as we near the end of 3rd Quarter.

Please remember to call our office at 360-629-1350 if your child is absent (and expected) for in person academic support on M/T or Th/F. We appreciate you letting us know why your child wasn't with us in the morning.

Sports update

It's been great to have sports conditioning back in the building. There are no sports for the next two weeks; our current season will resume on Monday, April 12.

We do have room in our General Conditioning sessions for a few more students--including sixth graders! If your student is interested in General Sports conditioning for the final two weeks after spring break, please email Holly Christmas at for more information.

Look for more information and sign ups for our May season in mid-April. We will have conditioning for Track and Field, Soccer, and Flag Football.

No Class Meeting on March 31

Because of the district-wide training on Wednesday, March 31, we are unable to host our usual Class Meetings. Our next Class Meetings will be on Wednesday, April 14.

As usual, please reach out if you need anything at all!

Have a great weekend!

Strategies & Resources

Hello Everyone! This week in our Wednesday Class Meetings, I presented a Character Strong lesson called “Interruptions.” This is another way to talk about healthy coping strategies when things feel stressful and overwhelming.

The idea is that there are many ways to “interrupt” the cycle of stress > reaction in order to feel more in control of tough situations by using healthy coping strategies. For example, students shared great ideas like painting, reading, taking a break from the situation at hand, walking, listening to music, asking a parent or adult for help, and talking to a friend, when faced with a stressful situation.

We also talked about how it is okay to not feel okay, and how sometimes we need to get some additional help if we are experiencing mental health challenges. See some of the resources we shared below.

Also, I came across this article, Communicating with Teens During COVID from the American Psychological Association, and wanted to share with families in case it is useful.

Please email me at if you are concerned about your child, or if you would to check in.

We are here for you ~

Important information for return to school:

1. Please make sure your student, especially 6th graders and other students new to our building, know their first period teachers name. We will have many adults at the entrance to the building, in the hallways and outside classrooms to help direct students. We also have signs posted all over the building. First period teachers will help students with directions to their second period class and we will once again have many adults in the hallways to help guide students safely and comfortably to their second period.

2. Bus routing. All busses will go the high school first to be screened before coming to Stanwood Middle School. For the process at the high school students receive a stamp on their wrist to verify they have been screened, please make sure your student is aware. Students being dropped off and students walking will be screened at the front of the building.

At the end of the day busses will pick up students at the front of the building and parents can pick up students in our east parking lot.

If you need information on bus routes please see the Family Message sent out by the District last night.

3. Our Hybrid Schedule is for academic support:

a. Students with the last name A-K will be in school Monday and Tuesday.

b. Students with the last name L-Z will be in school Thursday and Friday.

c. Our first week back, students will go to periods 1 and 2 both days.

d. The second week, students will go to periods 3 and 4 both days.

e. The third week, students will go to periods 5 and 6 both days.

f. The first class of the day starts at 7:40, the second class starts at 8:35. Students leave campus at 9:25.

4. As we plan for Spartans to return to Stanwood Middle School, our top priority is everyone's safety.

You and your Spartan will see videos and posters (examples below) to reflect student expectations to keep everyone safe and healthy at school.

We are continuing to get the school ready for students following all health department guidelines. As we work to follow all of the protocols required for our return, it is important that you make sure your Spartan knows the following:

a. Daily Attestation questions + temperature check to be in building.

b. Students will go straight to their first class in the morning.

c. Masks covering nose and mouth at all times.

d. Social distancing in classrooms and hallways at all times.

e. Bathroom breaks during class time only.

f. No food allowed. Water bottles are allowed, students just need to ask to step into the hallway to take a drink.

g. Bring charged chromebook and headphones daily.

5. Here is the link to a video that will help remind everyone of our protocols:

We understand there is a lot of information! Please do not hesitate to call the school if you need anything. We will have lots of adults available to answer student questions, keep everyone safe and make sure students are comfortable.
