This month in PBIS; Park Lawn Strong
- Getting enough sleep (weeks of 10/5 and 10/12) Students learned:
- Having a specific bedtime for during the school week and on the weekends
- Utilizing a bedtime routine
- Why sleep is good for our bodies and mind
- The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours of sleep per night for school aged children.
- Our brains need sleep to restore resources that were used up during the day.
- A well rested brain can solve problems, learn new information and enjoy the day a lot more than a tired brain.
- Sleep Debt: when we owe our mind and body sleep.
- A bedtime routine includes all of the things that you do with your school aged child just before and up to the time that you put them to bed.
- Goals of a bedtime routine: Be consistent, include dental hygiene, keep it short (10-15 minutes), remind your child to use the bathroom, start early.
- Avoid: stimulating activities 30-60 minutes before bedtime, creating poor sleep associations, drag it out, caffeine which is a hidden ingredient in many foods and snacks.
We invite your family to utilize the the sleep log included below for a two week period to capture the total hours of sleep your child is getting.
