Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School
April 18-22, 2016
What an amazing week to be a Gladiator! There are so many exciting things happening around our campus, it's hard not to brag about our school in every venue!
The week started with the Meet Of Champs to conclude the track season. What an invigorating evening and the weather even cooperated! It is so encouraging to watch the dedication our kids pour into the track events. Track is one of the toughest sports to train for and often they are competing against themselves to be better each week. Many of them competed in multiple events, which speaks volumes about their dedication and perseverance. When they were not competing, they were cheering for their fellow teammates from the stands and encouraging them to push on and finish strong. There are over 18 track events for them to enter. Our 7th and 8th girls finished 1st in the district! Our 8th grade boys finished 1st! What an accomplishment!
None of that could happen without the dedication of our coaching staff! They observe the students and guide them to the event that fits their strengths. They encourage them to compete in something they might not have ever considered had someone not asked them to participate. We are blessed to have such caring and talented coaches at Garcia: Gary Martin, Hondo Gonzalez, Jim Young, John Bean, Cyndi Glosup, Kari Michalik, Jeff Erday, and Christine Morrison.
Something that truly made me feel honored to be the principal of this amazing school was when I looked down at the student sitting in front of me at the track meet and saw her working on homework after she had competed in two different track events. I was truly amazed at the work ethic and grit this young lady possesses. It was nice to witness something so touching and encouraging. It speaks to what a wonderful community we have.
Our band competed in UIL on Wednesday and Thursday at Warren HS. The Concert Band Non-Varsity earned a 2 for their performance and a 1 in sight reading.
The Symphonic Non-Varsity earned Sweepstakes!
The Honor Band Varsity earned Sweepstakes as well!
Thanks to Guerrina Esparza and Alicia Perkins for their dedication in preparing the students to perform at such a high level! Congratulations on a job well done!
Theater Arts performed their Lip Sync show on Thursday. Again, our students are encouraged to step out and attempt something they might not think they can do thanks to the guidance from a teacher. Amy McFarlane has a knack for getting these kids to perform at a level that is unheard of at a middle school.
The extracurricular events mentioned above fuel the passion in our student's lives. They are just as important as their academic courses. I am amazed that these kids dedicate the hours to their academics and extra curricular events. I thought I had a busy schedule.
Our own Kim Arnall (Math/Special Education Teacher)will be running the Boston Marathon on Monday. She is a great example to our students about having grit and perseverance. Good luck Kim! We'll be cheering you on!
The weather on Tuesday evening caused a hardship for one of our families; their house caught fire. Our student body, faculty, and community has stepped up to help this family out in their time of need. It is heartbreaking to think about the effects this tragedy will have on the family. It is uplifting to know that our community is stepping up to help them out.
