Spotlight on Literacy
Mt. Healthy City Schools will empower students to read & write universally, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Reading and Writing Universally
To begin their unit on functions, Mr. Reger, Ms. Honeywell, Mr. Pearce, and Mr. Neal worked with their 8th grade math students to preview their new vocabulary words. Before asking their students to begin applying the different concepts of functions, they knew that it was necessary to make sure they had an understanding of what each concept meant. By dragging and dropping definitions and pictures to the appropriate word, they were able to ensure that students could both define and show a visual representation of each new vocabulary word. In doing so, students were able to show evidence that they were prepared to begin applying those definitions and concepts to their work.
Communicating Effectively
To start 2022 off strong, students in Ms. Starline and Ms. Gilligan's 7th grade ELA classes were asked to take the time to set both academic and personal goals. By collaboratively working on their goal setting in the Jamboard below, students were able to bounce ideas off of one another as well as extend on their thinking about how they can accomplish their goals. Through this collaborative process, students will also be able to hold one another accountable for both their short and long term goals. By coming back to this Jamboard in a few weeks or at the end of the year, students can share what went well with their goals and what they still need to work on.
Thinking Critically
After analyzing two informational texts about the history of sneakers, Ms. Miller and Ms. McLaughlin's 8th grade ELA students were asked to think critically and synthesize the information gathered in the two readings in order to complete one of the the six tasks below. By differentiating the assessment in this manner, Ms. Miller and Ms. McLaughlin allowed each of their individual students to tap into their strengths and interests while simultaneously showing mastery of the same content as their peers.
