Finds During Informal and Formal Observations

  • Bringing closure to a math lesson by asking questions about what the students learned and how they exhibited the practice standards. This method allows the teacher to see the progress the students made in just one lesson.

  • Well-managed classrooms including behaviors and procedures which provide an environment in which teaching and learning can flourish.


  • Objectives are to be posted in the appropriate instructional area for the content using a font large enough that it can be seen from various locations within the classroom. The objective is to be shared with students so that they understand the vocabulary and learning that is to take place during the lesson, throughout the lesson, and as part of the lesson conclusion. The objective should not be a sentence which tells students what activity they will be completing, but instead a sharing of the goal for learning within that lesson.

  • Taking advantage of partner and/or group work time to listen in and begin or deepen discussion, promote problem solving, extend learning.

Focus on Domain 1 - Knowledge of child and adolescent development

What does highly effective look like? Lessons are consistently developed which are intellectually, emotionally and socially appropriate for the age level of the students with modifications for students who do not follow the general pattern of development. Lesson activities and experiences show teacher understanding of the needs for each individual student with opportunities for scaffolding and/or acceleration as demonstrated. Assessment is developmentally appropriate and differentiates for students who may have different needs. The pace of the lesson maximizes learning including an accelerated and/or slower pace.
