Screen-Free Week
May 1-7, 2023
Dear St. Teresa Families,
Many teachers and staff have been talking recently about technology, video games, social media, and the effects of screen time on children’s health and well being. We all use electronics daily at home and school, and we understand the importance of these devices in our daily lives. However, we also are aware of the legitimate concerns that too much technology can have detrimental effects on physical, mental and emotional health. We are offering information in this week’s newsletter to help educate parents about technology along with links for further information. Our aim is to educate families and open up conversations about technology - how to use it appropriately, how to impose limits, and how to talk to children about it. The following resources have information we hope you find useful! Slides with links to resources
Additional Resources
In addition to the recording and resources, we encourage your family to participate in Screen Free Week, May 1-7, 2023. There are many ways to be involved in this - from spending one less hour every day on a screen to putting away all screens for the week. You can learn more at Screen Free Week.
Family Sharing on an iPhone
May 1-5 Challenge
Every day St. Teresa School will post an activity on our FB page for your children to do instead of spending time on a screen. You are invited to post a photo of your child/children engaging in the activity or you can send it to Mrs. Sandhorst at rsandhorst@st-teresa.pvt.k12.ia.us or Mrs. Bohr at hbohr@st-teresa.pvt.k12.ia.us. The next day, there will be a little prize for all who participated. Each time your child participates, their name will go in a drawing for a bigger prize at the end of the week.

Going Further…If you are interested in more screen-free activities, look at the following links!
1,000 Hours Outside: The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome!
