Home of Fantastic First Graders!
Week of January 5-9
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing vacation with their families and friends over the holiday season. We are all settled into our new classroom, Room 2. Here's what we are up to this week...
Reader's Workshop
We will begin an author study on Jan Brett. We will connect her stories to our schema, or background knowledge. Students will learn how what they know in their schema can help them to better understand and evaluate a story. This will help them become more critical readers and begin to analyze a story more deeply. We will be reading some classics, such as The Mitten and The Hat, as well as Annie and the Wild Animals and Trouble with Trolls.

Writer's Workshop
Students will learn about opinions in Writer's Workshop. We will talk about how everyone has his or her own opinion, and that it's okay if our opinions are different. We will begin writing pieces that give our opinions on topics, such as answering the question "Do you like winter?", and providing the reasons why we either agree/disagree or like/dislike the topic.

Math
We will begin Unit 7 this week on place value and numbers up to 120. We will start by focusing on how to form the numbers 11-19 using tens and ones and then extend the concept to higher numbers. We will use a hundred chart to practice counting and identifying numbers. We will also review counting by 10s before we start counting by other numbers, such as 2s and 5s. Many of the skills and concepts in this unit will be a review of content covered in Kindergarten, but it will set students up for success in upcoming units on place value and adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.

Science
Later this week, we will begin a unit on Animals and Habitats in science. In this unit, students will take a closer look at the features of nonfiction or informational texts and we will complete research together to answer the essential questions, "What is a habitat?", "How do readers get information from informational text?", and "How does research help us learn?"
