BARBER BULLETIN

December 14-18

Sorry for the delay.......here's an update tonight!

Hi friends

I want to be sure you know what is going on with Eric and our family.

After our appointment at MUSC this past Monday, the neurologist suggested that there may be an abnormality in Eric's brain that he noticed from the scans. This is what could be contributing to his loss of vision and severe headaches.

The good news! It is highly unlikely that it is cancer or a brain tumor!

The neurologist requested that Eric visit a vascular neurosurgeon on Wednesday and this doctor thinks Eric may be a candidate for a brain stent that would help the spinal fluid flow easier in his brain. This procedure, if he is a candidate, would alleviate the need altogether for a shunt - and even more, alleviate his headaches and improve his vision!

However, in order to know for sure if he is a candidate, they need to measure the pressure in his brain between the veins. So, in an effort to do that, they need to do an angiogram and a venogram of his brain on Monday at MUSC Hospital. It is a 3-4 hour procedure and we have to be there at 8:30am (needless to say, I won't be at school tomorrow)

We will know after the procedure before we go home whether he is a candidate for the stent or not - then we will have some tough decisions to make, as the stent procedure has some pretty scary risks involved, as you can imagine.

Here is an article from John Hopkins about the procedure: http://m.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/brain_stent_offers_alternative_to_shunt_for_fixing_potentially_blinding_vein_narrowing

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers - and for your support of my time away from school. Those of you that know me well know how much I love my job and love this school and hate being away.

Thank you for understanding my need to be with Eric on Monday.........I will keep you posted!
