A Note from Mrs. Schneider
Dear Woodland Families,
Welcome Back! It was so exciting to see all of the staff and students. I got to see smiling faces and hearing their stories from the break. I heard about getting a new puppy, making snowmen outside, and playing board games with family. So much fun!
As we head into the next few weeks, we will be taking the NWEA Reading and Math assessments. We take the test three times a year to help us measure growth and to make instructional shifts to meet student needs. Teachers will be sending out specifics to you regarding testing dates and times. We will complete this assessment online. It is very important that you DO NOT provide any help on the assessments. If we do not receive data on the students true ability, we won't know that they need help and they may miss out on opportunities we can offer. Below are some resources regarding NWEA that you might find helpful.

Have a nice weekend,

Meet Our New Woodland Staff
Nyein Lwin, 5th Grade Student Teacher
My name is Nyein Lwin, and I am excited to be working with Mrs. Jennifer McNaughton
this winter semester as a student teacher. As for my educational background, I have
obtained a Biology (B.S.) degree from Oakland University, and I am currently enrolled in
the OU's Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education (MATEE) program. I love
spending time with my family by watching a movie together, sharing meals or playing
games with them. When the weather is warm and sunny, I also love to run at my local
park.

Alicia Smith, Kindergarten Teacher
My name is Alicia Smith, and I am excited to be filling in for Bridget Wheeler during her maternity leave. I am a Rochester Hills native and recent Oakland University graduate. I hold a certification in Elementary Education and am currently in the process of receiving an endorsement in K-8 Language Arts. I spent the fall across the hall student teaching in Mrs. Castaldi's class of first graders.
In my free time, I love being active and visiting the gym whenever I can. My favorite place to be active is at Bloomer Park. As much as I love being active, I love staying home and snuggling on the couch with my puppy, Gunner! I am thrilled to be a part of the Woodland team and looking forward to the rest of the school year.

This week, we focused on Optimism.
Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it. It represents a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping stone to achieve their goals.
Optimistic people are sometimes regarded as naïve or even delusional. And, yes, there are some people who are illogically optimistic, which can be detrimental. However, optimism is not about wearing rose-colored glasses and rolling over when the going gets tough. It’s about staying focused on the good in any situation – allowing you to be aware of opportunities and accountable for your emotions.
Next week, we will focus on Prudence.
Help With Our Yearbook!
We need your help! With the school year starting off remotely (and now continuing remotely), we have no fun photos of our students to include in the 2020-2021 yearbook. We still want to have fun memories of this school year that include our amazing students! It would also be a great way to include pictures of your children if you were not able to attend Picture Day.
Below will be a google link for you to attach pictures of your children. There is a folder for each grade, Leadership, Girl Scouts, and Spirit Week. Please send any photos you have to these various folders. We can’t guarantee that we can use all the photos shared with us, but we will do our best to include as many as we can.
If you’re unable to attach your photo, please feel free to email a copy of the photo to Denise.Scrase@avondaleschools.org with your child's name and which grade or group you would like the picture to be added.
Here is the link to the folders, please place your photo in the proper folder.
