Second Grade
Dear Second Grade Parents,
We are proud of our Roots and Shoots group for presenting their findings about tigers at Morning Meeting today. They are very invested in saving tigers and protecting their habitat! Special thanks to Rebecca Gilbert and to Sophie (Sasha’s au pair) for leading the sessions after school.
Mrs. Huntley facilitated a discussion on coping strategies with the children today. They thought of ideas on how they can calm down and glued them onto a sheet called “Don’t Have a Meltdown!” Please see the photo below.
Our science club received certificates of participation for their submission of “The Story of How We Tried to Help the Chesapeake Bay” to The DuPont Challenge Science Writing Competition. Thanks so much to Dr. Yaffe for spearheading this endeavor!
We learned about the life cycle of a salmon to understand more about Pacific Northwest culture. The children arranged the stages of the life cycle in the correct sequence and drew beautiful illustrations to accompany each stage.
In book clubs, Mrs. Kaufman’s group is reading Mercy Watson Fights Crime by Kate DiCamillo. The children are thinking beyond the text through reading reflections and written responses. Ms. Holzer and Mrs. King’s groups traded places from last week so that all kids could read A Mouse Called Wolf by Dick King-Smith and Punished! by David Lubar.
We have entered the realm of subtraction with “trades first” (or borrowing, as you may think of it). This is where we are seeing that quick knowledge of basic subtraction facts is essential, as the children are now doing multi-steps with double-digit subtraction. Please continue to practice basic facts at home.
Have a great weekend,
Emilia and Rachel
