Welcome Letter

President's Greeting

Welcome Members and Future Leaders of the Illinois Association for Multicultural Counseling!

My name is Carla B. Cheatham and I am your president for the 2020-2021 year. I hope that you find the information on our website valuable and helpful. We would like to thank our immediate past-president, Jahaan Abdullah, for her outstanding leadership; and dedication to helping this division remain a beacon of light for multiculturalism.

We has updated our social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. We will continue to find ways to engage our members and others with an interest in multicultural counseling in discussions that relate to such issues as social injustice through advocacy and action. We also understand this year has had moments that could not have been predicted by anyone; but we are hoping to work together to address historical issues of inequality, inequity and discrimination.

The goals for his year are simple: (1) Increase our membership (2) Provide educational and collaborative opportunities to our members, and (3) Provide support to counselors and future counselors. Some of the plans we have for this year include, hosting several webinars, creating several committees to assist us in keeping current on social media, updating our newsletters and other resources for our members. In addition, we will send out information regarding our virtual membership meetings, agenda for the ICA conference face-to-face membership meeting and our conference for May 2021. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to cancel our May 2020 conference.

As this year has shown us, we have so much work to do. I am confident that we can reach our goals. Your support, membership, dedication and commitment is needed; we look forward to your help this year. I am very excited about working together! If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please email me at Illinoismulticulturalcoun@gmail.com. I look forward to this being a great year!
