This month highlights the importance of mobilizing schools, families and community partners to promote regular attendance by developing tiered strategies and personalized interventions to reduce chronic absence.

Attendance Works is a non-profit initiative that collaborates with schools, districts, states, communities and organizations to ensure that everyone recognizes that chronic absence is a serious issue that can be addressed using a positive, problem-solving approach grounded in an understanding of educational inequities. Parent Surrogates Needed
Are you looking for a way to give back to your community? Have you considered serving as a surrogate parent for a school district? You may be wondering, what is a surrogate parent?
A surrogate parent represents a student with disabilities in all special education matters relating to the identification, evaluation, educational placement and provision of a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to the child.

Ohio Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Showcase winners announced
Each year, the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio PBIS Network host a Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Showcase to recognize Ohio’s schools implementing PBIS with high fidelity.
This event brings together hundreds of Ohio principals, teachers, counselors and others to network and share best practices around PBIS implementation to ensure safe and supportive school environments.
The following Region 1 schools will be honored at the Virtual PBIS/OLAC Showcase on December 6, 2022.
Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports and Restraint and Seclusion Rule and Checklist
The purpose of rule 3301-35-15 (Standards for the implementation of PBIS and the use of restraint and seclusion), which was revised and re-approved June 24, 2021 is to ensure Ohio school districts establish consistent policies and procedures for the use of PBIS and emergency restraint and seclusion. The intent is to create safe environments for students and staff and reduce the need for emergency physical restraint and seclusion through behavioral supports and training. Nominations Being Accepted for the 2022 Rise Award to Honor Classified School Employees
The Ohio Department of Education will accept nominations for the Recognizing Inspirational School Employees (RISE) Award Sept. 1-30. Congress created the award to honor classified school employees who provide exemplary service to their schools, students, colleagues and communities. The Ohio Department of Education will accept nominations for the award September 1-30, 2022. Congress created the award in 2019 and the U.S. Department of Education oversees the program.

Chelsea Bodnarik, M.Ed.
Nick Jacobs, M.Ed.
Nick received his Bachelor’s degree in integrated social studies (7-12) from Bowling Green State University and his Master’s in educational leadership from American College of Education. Most of his spare time is spent with his wife, Julie, and their two babies. He also enjoys spending time with their eldest daughter, who attends his alma mater, BGSU. Nick will be focused on School Improvement and the Ohio Improvement Process (OIP).
