Internationally Speaking, with Principal Bryant
Dear Silver Spring International Families,
We have a busy week ahead with three big events taking place:
- We welcome students and staff from The Victoria School in Bogota, Colombia. They are participating in our biannual exchange program and will be with SSIMS host families through October 17th.
- Open House is back! We welcome parents & caregivers to shadow their child(ren) for period 2, Jag 5, and period 4 classes on Monday, October 10th. The experience runs from 8:15 am to 11:00 am. Registration is required. You can pre-register through this link. You may also register on site (please be prepared to wait in line for entry if you choose this method).
- Our October PTSA meeting will serve double-duty as the rescheduled SSIMS Community meeting. It promises to be an exciting time of connection, information sharing, and community building! Please join us.
Have a GREAT weekend! š¾
SSIMS Open House Reminders
We look forward to welcoming you to school for our Open House experience next Monday, October 10th, 2022. On that day, you are invited to shadow your child during their period 2 and period 4 classes (8:15 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.). You can also join us in the cafeteria during the Jag advisory period (9:40 a.m. - 10:05 a.m.) to experience a Leader In Me lesson led by school staff, with a chance to ask questions about this curriculum, or you can join your child in their Jag 5 advisory period to experience the lesson with the students.
Staff at our greeting table in the main lobby will verify your registration (for those that pre-registered by 10:00 am on 10/7) and give you a visitor badge that must be visible on you during the time you are in the building. Onsite registration will be available, however, we ask for your patience during check in as there is likely to be a line for onsite registration.
Please remember that you will be in the classroom as an observer. However, if a teacher invites you to participate in their class or in an activity, you may feel free to do so. If there is a further conversation you would like to have with your childās teacher, please email him/her/them to set up a phone conference or meeting for a later date and time.
Richard Montgomery IB Program
Attention all 8th graders currently taking Algebra or Honors Geometry- Richard Montgomery is having an open house for their IB program on October 17 at 6:30 PM at Richard Montgomery High School!
You can check out the slides RM students presented on 10/07 to 8th graders here!
Safety Reminders for Students & Caregivers
- Students arriving to school before 7:50 AM should immediately access the cafeteria or field house (gym) for early morning spaces monitored by staff. Students should avoid hanging out on the front terrace and sidewalks without adult supervision.
- All external doors within school are locked and should not be propped open by students at any time. *The front doors are propped and monitored by school staff during arrival and dismissal for ease of crowd access. Doors that are not monitored directly by staff must be closed and locked at all times.
- Visitors to the building can gain access by ringing the bell and stating their reason for access. Once buzzed in, visitors should go directly to the main office and present a government issued identification card to conduct school business.
- Students, staff, nor visitors should allow others to enter the main doors behind them without clearance from the main office.
School safety is everyone's responsibility! Thanks for doing your part to keep our children safe.
Calendar for 10/10 - 10/14
Community Project Parent Meeting
Opportunities to visit SSIMS
Parent Teacher Conferences: While MCPS sets aside formal days for schools to engage in parent teacher conferences towards the end of November, we want you to know you can have a parent teacher conference anytime you want! Simply contact your child's counselor who can set up the conference for you. No need to wait!
October PTSA/Community Meeting: Please join us at our joint PTSA/ rescheduled SSIMS Community Meeting on Tuesday, October 11th at 7 pm. The meeting takes place in the SCES Gymnasium (enter through SSIMS). We will have a variety of engagement opportunities beginning at 6 pm before the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!
Mental Health Awareness Week
Our Silver Spring International Wellbeing Team (including administrators, counselors, and other staff members) will be holding a Mental Health Awareness Fair on October 19. Our goal is to support our students in grades 6-8 and promote positive social emotional wellness. At the āStress Bustersā table, there will be information about managing stress and anxiety. We hope to give each student who visits the table a mini, star-shaped stress ball. Our Mental Health Awareness Fair will help us to provide our students with tools to manage their emotions, so they can feel safe, comfortable, and ready to learn.
We would like to thank the members of our community who sent us items from the Wish List last week. We greatly appreciate your support! If others are able to help, we are grateful for your kindness and generosity.
