El Sol Parent Bulletin

April 2022

Dear El Sol Families:

Happy Spring! April is flying by, but winter is trying to keep its hold! Please continue to monitor the weather to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the conditions.

Please turn in your child's letter of intent if you have not already. Because El Sol is not a neighborhood school, families must opt IN to our program every year. If you do not turn in the Letter of Intent, your student will automatically get placed at their neighborhood school.

Do you have an incoming kindergartner? Now is the time to register your child for Kindergarten if they are turning five before September 1st. We have limited spots for kindergarten, so we want to make sure your child is counted! Please call the office at 337-0230 for details on how to register.

2nd and 3rd graders participate in Annie's Big Nature Lesson for a week of outdoor learning

Each year, students in 2nd and 3rd grade at El Sol get to take part in an amazing week of Nature-related activities at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Annie's Big Nature Lesson is a program meant to help students develop nature appreciation and experience learning opportunities outdoors. Students ride the bus to the Nature Center at 9:00 am and return by 2:00 pm everyday for an entire week! During this time, students participate in Teacher-Led lessons that relate to the district science curriculum, and Expert-Led lessons where naturalists who work at the nature center lead them through lessons about natural phenomena, including learning about plant and animal life, geology, and how we use and depend on natural resources, just to name a few. Students reflect in journals and engage in activities that demonstrate the importance of nature and how we are inextricably connected to it. Check out photos below from the 3rd grade experience!

El Sol Children's Day Celebration is April 28th!

We are excited once again to celebrate our children and their importance on our annual Día del Niño, Thursday April 28th. Students will participate in several activities related to the Children's Human Rights, including fun educational activities in their classroom, a piñata for every class, and a special performance by the Woods Lake Dance Company! Thank you to the MANY families who donated candy for the piñatas. Check out the video below to learn about the UNICEF Children's Rights.

KPS Bond proposal - El Sol may get a new building!

On May 3, 2022, the Kalamazoo community will have the opportunity to vote on a bond proposal. If voters approve this bond proposal, there is expected to be NO increase in the tax rate.

This bond would provide $197.1 million to fund capital improvements in our 24 schools. The Kalamazoo Public Schools May 2022 bond proposal was developed to invest in our community's future. The bond funds will enable KPS to invest in safety and security; invest in buildings, classrooms, and mechanical upgrades; and invest in technology.

Election day: May 3, 2022

Polls are open: Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Registered voters may cast a ballot at the polling location established by their city/township.

Absentee voting: Contact your precinct; ballots will be available by March 19, 2022.

For more information on voting: michigan.gov/vote

If you have further questions, please call (269) 337-1572 or e-mail bond@kalamazoopublicschools.net, or visit the KPS Bond Web Page!

If the Bond Proposal passes, El Sol will receive a new building!

El Sol is aging, and it is getting harder and harder to keep up with the repairs. If voters approve the bond proposal, El Sol will be demolished and replaced with a NEW BUILDING! Current El Sol students will most likely be in middle school or high school when construction is completed, but remember, ALL schools in KPS have proposals for updates and improvements that will benefit students in every grade and every school in KPS. Please share this information with your friends and family who live in Kalamazoo, and encourage them to vote on May 3rd!
