CES Tribe September 2021 Edition
Principally Speaking
As we kickoff September and continue the rest of the school year, let us welcome and enjoy the seasons’ changes. It has been said change is inevitable; growth is optional. I encourage you to help your children see and accept new situations and challenges as opportunities for growth. The beauty and strength of learning is to help prepare our youth for the complex, diverse, and challenging world they will encounter as adults—an awe-inspiring world of wonder and constant change.
Thank you for participating in our Back 2 School Bash in August. We were excited to welcome our parents/guardians/stakeholders/students/faculty/staff and others to our campus with a great turnout!
Our 21st CCLC Afterschool Program is off to a great start. Please contact your child's teacher for an application to enroll in the program. Once submitted, you will receive a phone call for a start date if available slots are available.
The Alabama Literacy Law states that students must read on grade-level by the end of 3rd grade. To be successful in meeting this goal, it is very important that students master the ELA standards for each grade level. Let’s work as a team to help our children achieve this goal. We ask that you work with us to encourage and assist your child in reaching these goals. Please take some time to read with your child. Kindergarten
We have been learning about rules, schedules, and procedures. We have already learned letters Aa and Bb as well as numbers 0-5. We have been engineering in our STEAM building centers, and learning to be responsible, good citizens.
In September, we will be learning more letters and even begin to learn sight words. We get to use our new colorful math workbooks as we continue to learn more and more numbers! Fall is around the corner, so a Fall art project is in the works!

1st Grade
First grade is falling in love with reading! We are learning more about letters and sounds and how to put them together to read. First graders are working really hard on their listening skills and developing their comprehension of stories we have read. Math is moving along as we are learning how to add and subtract fluently. In social studies, we are learning about rules, laws, and how to be a good citizen. We are becoming little scientists as we learn about living and nonliving things in the world around us.

We are excited to have our students back inside the classroom.
This year will be challenging on so many levels. However, our goal is to make it fun and exciting!
Our students will explore many skills in a fun and innovative way using programs that use hands-on activities and scaffolded instruction. Explorations help students develop a growth mindset by engaging them in productive struggle, leading to conceptual understanding. With a strong emphasis on problem solving in the classroom, students can transfer their knowledge to new concepts and apply their understanding to real-life situations. We are excited to offer a new music program to 6th grade under the direction of Mr. Strom, CHS Band Director. Information has been sent home with students.
We look forward to taking this adventure with your child.

Reading & Literacy
At Cherokee Elementary School we will be using Renaissance STAR to track literacy progress. We have been working hard to complete the STAR Literacy Level Assessments the past month. Our students did a great job in completing the beginning of the year assessment. Keep up the great work and remember to listen to your child read every night.

Multilingual Learners!!
I am so happy to begin a new school year with all of you! The state of Alabama is embracing a change with the ESL (English as a Second Language) program. It is now being called ML, for Multilingual Learners. This change represents the knowledge that our students bring with them. Sometimes new students already speak 2 or 3 languages when they begin to learn English! It is important to keep in mind that we all have knowledge, and we are all still learning!

Music
Hello from the CES music room!
My name is Courtney Keenum, and it is my pleasure to be your child’s music teacher this year! We are having a blast exploring different genres of music within our “Musician of the Month” curriculum. August’s MOTM was the king of rock n roll himself- Elvis Presley. During September, we will survey the queen of soul- Aretha Franklin. We have also been learning to play classroom instruments and read/describe written music through the use of music vocabulary and movement exercises. If you ever have any questions about your child’s music education, always feel free to reach out!
