CIMR Student Newsletter
Week Begining: 25th January 2016
An Exciting Year Ahead!
Despite January almost being at an end, welcome to 2016 everyone! As a result of a literal bombardment of requests (verbal and otherwise) for the CIMR Student Newsletter to get back circulating the important news of CIMR, I thought it was only fair to comply. This bumper newsletter is particularly exciting, so please read carefully!
2016 is set to be an exciting year. Some CIMR Student Committee initiatives that were planned during the final months of 2015 are now beginning to blossom into exciting realities. These include better integration with the other Addenbrookes bioscience research institutes, the organisation of a CIMR Student run 3-day research retreat, and most importantly the creation of the CIMR football team - Cell-Tick. All of these events aim to provide networking opportunities between ourselves and other Cambridge bioscientists, as well as being potentially sometimes fun.
Michaelmas term 2015 saw some substantial changes to the framework in which the CIMR Student body is able to integrate. However, their continuing success depends completely upon the willingness of you lovely people to participate and be enthusiastic about the events that we organise. So...therefore...um... just be willing and enthusiastic about CIMR student things!
Enough fluffle and mubbling from me! Some exciting things below, so please read on.
Have an amazingly amazing week, and may your gels run straight and not too far.
Love as ever,
Guy Pearson

The Student Noticeboard
Messrs Cheesman and his affiliates have installed our new STUDENT NOTICEBOARD! You hopefully will have seen it outside the canteen on Level 7. You should be able to spot it by the big white letters that spells 'STUDENTS'. I will be putting this newsletter up each week, as well as other exciting things such as photos and sports results.

The CIMR Young-Person's Retreat 2016
Stephen Burr, Alex Davies and myself have been working hard to get the CIMR Young Person's retreat 2016 up and running. We have submitted a bid to the Graduate School of Life Sciences for ~£3000 towards the organisation of the event. The results of our bid are due to be released to us in the next week.
Very exciting!

Addenbrookes Research Institutes Science Collective
Late in December I went to a meeting at the LMB between all of the student presidents/reps of the various research institutes on the Addenbrookes site as the representative of the CIMR. We agreed that the potential for networking and colloboration between the institutes could be better utilised by having a more structured organisation in place to specifically manage that; hence the Addenbrookes Research Institutes Science Collective (the name may change!).
We are looking to hold three interdepartmental events per term: a lecture by someone either in science or industry about their life/experiences in science; a workshop of a similar ilk; and a social event.
We are busily planning these events for Lent term at the moment, and I'll let you know more details when they come to fruition. Could be exciting though!

Sport
The CIMR Student 5-A-Side Football Team
Tom O (our illustrious Sports Officer) has entered the CIMR into the Frankly Sports Centre 5-A-Side football tournament. The Frankly is only two minutes walk from the CIMR in the direction of the LMB (boo!), and matches are scheduled for 6.45pm on Mondays.
Our team name is Cell-Tick. This is very funny and hopefully will make you laugh.
All ages and abilities are very welcome to play in this light-hearted sporting joviality. We will hopefully crush all the other institutes to highlight the the might and superiority of the CIMR. To get involved, please email to277@cam.ac.uk.
