Rough Rider Round-Up
August 21, 2023
Welcome families! The first three weeks are done and Rough Riders have done a wonderful job with learning the expectations, making friends, completing tests to show us what they know and learning in their classrooms! They are, without a doubt, demonstrating that they are "Leveling Up at Roosevelt Elementary"!
Attendance
Being here everyday is vital to your child's education. When they are not here, they miss out on valuable instruction. If they must miss, please call the office to excuse their absence.
Each month, we will enter all students with perfect attendance into a drawing for two grocery gift cards. We will also have a drawing for students with no tardies for the month.
Curriculum Night
Breakfast
Breakfast will be served daily in classrooms from 7:10-7:25. Learning will start at 7:30. Please make sure your child is here on time.
Dismissal
Thank you for your patience during drop off and dismissal. The first few weeks are always the hardest as we all learn the routine. :) It has already gotten faster.
If you are needing to change your child's dismissal procedure, please call the front office by 1:00.
A few key reminders to keep everyone safe and make the line go faster:
- You can not turn left when heading west on 8th Avenue into the drive thru lanes. (Mesa PD has given warnings, but is going to issue citations for now on)
- The small parking lot will be closed from 1:45- 2:15 for safety reasons.
- Please have your child enter and exit the car on the right side. Children can exit or enter the car at any fence openings, except in the crosswalk.
Child Find Notice
Mesa Unified School District is required by federal and state law (34 CFR 300.220.34 CFR 300.121) to conduct a “Child Find” effort as a means to locate, identify, and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. The purpose of Child Find is to locate these children so that a free appropriate public education can be made available. Upon request, Mesa Public Schools will screen any resident child as young as 2 years 9 months of age to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate.
After students are evaluated, eligible students are entitled to a free and appropriate education, including specially designed individualized instruction for disabled students between the ages of 3 and 21. This law applies to EVERY eligible child, regardless of the severity of the disability and assures confidentiality procedures are followed. If you suspect that your child has a disability (emotional, mental or physical) and does not receive Special Education services, contact the school psychologist at your neighborhood school or the Child Find Office at 480-472-0706.
Paws and Peers
Dear MPS Families,
Mesa Public Schools is participating in the Paws & Peers Foundation school therapy dog program. The district has partnered with Arizona Humane Society, Arizona Animal Welfare League, and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control to identify compatible shelter dogs for school staff to adopt and have trained. Participating MPS staff and their dogs (paw partners) complete extensive obedience and therapy trainings and are evaluated by Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT).
The Mutt-i-grees® curriculum is written by Yale University and will be used to incorporate lessons on social and emotional learning, resilience, empathy and the human-animal bond. Students may also interact directly with dogs for more individualized learning opportunities. Additionally, these dogs can serve as a trusted companion in the classroom, counseling, nurse or administrative offices for crisis intervention, behavioral de-escalation, or simply to address stress, anxiety and/or isolation.
All students at participating schools will have the opportunity to work with the therapy dogs!
If you do not want your student to participate in this curriculum or animal engagement, please visit this page for an opt-out form and return to the school office via email or drop off.
Class Dojo
Please be sure to join Class Dojo. Your child's teacher sent a link to join their class. Class Dojo is our main way to communicate between school and families.
