D303 Remote Learning


Dear Parents:

As we get deeper into our remote learning there are a few things I would like you to know or think about:

  1. Some of our kids are struggling. We know that every child and every home is different. Our students feel isolated, even though they are connected digitally. Please take the time to dig deeper with your child on how they are feeling. Our SEL focus this week (below), also gives you some ideas for supporting your child. Ask questions like:

    1. This has been a big change. How has this impacted you?

    2. Some kids are feeling bored or anxious or calm about this change. What are you feeling?

    3. How do you feel that this change has impacted your friendships or relationships with others? Do you feel connected or disconnected from them?

    4. How can I help you cope with all of this?

  2. Developing Routines Creates Stability: We know that kids like routines, even if they may fight with us on them. So consider adding some routines. Up and showered by 10 AM. School from 10:30 AM to 2 PM. Exercise from 2 PM to 3 PM. Family Activity from 4 PM to 6 PM. Working with your kids on routines gives them buy-in to their day and can help motivate them towards meeting goals!

  3. Food Access: We know that many family’s work situations have changed suddenly. Please remember to reach out to someone at WMS if you need some support. The district will also be sending out information on how we can support your family.

Dear RedHawk Families

Each week we will send a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) family activity and a resource for you to use together. As we’ve worked on this in school, we hope you can continue this work at home as a family. This week, our SEL focus is on Social Awareness.

Social Awareness: Perspective-taking; Having empathy for others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ability to understand social and ethical norms for behavior.

Family Activity - Check-In: Create predictability! Have a family meeting, creating the opportunity to be connected. Set a daily check-in time with each other. Share how you are doing. For some families, this might look like a family meeting or direct conversation. For other families, it might feel more natural to connect through activities e.g. walking, cooking, sports, etc...There is no one way.

Guiding Questions: How has all this change felt to your family? What have been the biggest challenges? What's going well? How have family members supported each other during this time? Give kids an opportunity to express their feelings and contribute in creating new family rituals and activities.

WMS 3rd Quarter Honor Roll

PLEASE NOTE: We may have some children who earn Honor Roll status but their name is NOT included on the published Honor Roll list. This doesn't diminish their accomplishment. It is simply because their parents have requested their children's names NOT be published under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Changes to FERPA permissions can be done in HAC or by contacting Student Services.

Congratulations to all of our RedHawks who worked hard throughout our THIRD quarter of this school year. A special shout out goes to those who were able to achieve Honor Roll status by earning either all A's or all A's and B's. All A's are on one tab, AB's are on another! Student Survey on Remote Learning and SEL:

D303 is partnering with Northern Illinois University to gain insights from students (grade 4 and up) related to remote learning. This jointly created survey will be sent to students on Tuesday, April 21. All aspects of student information will remain confidential. If you would like additional information on the survey, please contact David Chiszar, Executive Director Assessment & Accountability (david.chiszar@d303.org), or Patti Palagi, Director of Instructional Interventions (patti.palagi@d303.org). The survey will capture student insights connected to remote learning, social-emotional well being, and coping strategies/supports accessed during this unique time. NIU has established a partnership with D303 through their federal Project Prevent and Address Bullying grant. We are excited to gain additional insights into students' perceptions of remote learning in order to assist us in directing our academic and social-emotional programming.

Fridays During Remote Learning

We want our RedHawks to participate in learning each day! Monday through Thursday our teachers will be providing lessons. Friday is a day to continue learning by completing lessons, catching-up on past or missing work, or doing enrichment lessons.

Please visit the website D303 Optional Remote Learning For Students to access enrichment lessons. In addition to the weekly SEL activity, the website houses a variety of optional learning experiences in the areas of math, digital citizenship, English Language Arts, college and career, and STEM. We encourage you to ask your child to engage in the SEL lessons before exploring the other choice options. Although these optional learning experiences were designed for use on Fridays, students are welcome to engage in the learning experiences on the website anytime.

Just a note that we do not check messages on Facebook (FB). Unfortunately, we get so much spam in FB Messenger that we struggle to see messages easily. Please skip FB Messenger and send emails directly to the staff member with whom you would like to communicate. Or better yet, use the "Let's Talk" link located on every district homepage. We realize that there are varied financial challenges right now for more of our families. Through the generosity of WMS families, we have a fund for families in need. While we understand there are a variety of community agencies that support, schools often serve as that conduit. Gift cards can include Jewel, Target, Walmart, or other primary food sources.

Helping our kids to understand that there are things we can control and other things we cannot control. This is an important skill to learn. The graphic below helps them/us put into perspective what each of us can control. Our intention is to share this as a potential conversation starter for your family.

SEL Lessons: We hope parents/guardians and students engaged in last week's SEL lesson focused on the use of positive self-talk. As we continue to adjust to remote learning and community health expectations, we realize adults and children alike are experiencing a sense of loss. Our efforts to support student growth and development include both academics and social emotional learning (SEL) standards. Both are critical to a child’s success and during times of stress, recognizing feelings and having strategies to deal with those feelings are essential. Each week, parents/guardians and students will be provided SEL information and lessons aligned with the five core competencies. This information will come to you through your principal's weekly newsletter. This weeks competency is:

  • Self-management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals.

We are asking students to identify and use strategies to manage emotions. Video clips and text is embedded to foster conversation. The challenges and uncertainty facing families and children are impactful on overall mental health and well being. We are hopeful the resources shared will be a support to parents/guardians and children. Dear Parents:

This message is a reminder to elementary school families that the Intra-District transfer window for the 2020-2021 school year opens on April 7 at 8:00 a.m.

For the 2020-2021 school year, ALL elementary students have been assigned to their attendance area school by the District. This includes elementary students currently attending a school on an intra-district transfer.

An Intra-District Transfer Request must be submitted online no sooner than 8:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday following spring break (April 7, 2020) and no later than 4:00 p.m. on the third Monday following (April 20). A link to the request form will be posted on the District 303 web page (district.d303.org) by 8:00 a.m. on April 7.

If you are requesting a transfer for more than one child, a separate request must be submitted for each. Due to fluctuating class sizes at schools and each grade level, siblings are not guaranteed placement. If granted, transportation is the responsibility of the parents.
