Happy Sunday Patriot Families
I am full this weekend as I reflect on the amazing community I serve! Last week was an amazing week of Homecoming festivities and our students and community really showed up and showed out! I want to acknowledge several groups who were instrumental in helping to make our homecoming week a huge success:
- Mayor of Tyrone, Mr. Eric Dial, Linda Owen, Tanya Sumutherman, Kim Sutton, and Charletta Harvey all judged our hallway decorations and parade floats!
- Ms. Gallman, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Purdy, Ms. McDonald, Ms. Beane, and our front office staff all were instrumental in making our parade, powder-puff game, pep-rally, dance, and spirit week a HUGE success!
- Our parent volunteers, Cheer Booster Club, DJ, Pop of Color Designs and Decor, Hutch & Such Catering, and our team of Assistant Principals for helping to make the Homecoming Dance an event to remember!
The month of October will be just as busy so please continue to read our newsletter to stay abreast of our academic, athletic, and artistic events that are slated to be equally as impressive as our September events.
We look forward to your support on all policies and procedures and to another successful week of teaching and learning!

We hope your fall semester is off to a great start!
The Y is excited to share our fall application period for two youth civic engagement opportunities - our Georgia Youth Cabinet, and the Youth Advocate Program available to all cabinet applicants.
Georgia Youth Cabinet
The 2022-2023 Georgia Youth Cabinet will be led by Youth Governor Benjamin Scott, and we are seeking applicants for our remaining cabinet positions!
- All high school students (grades 9-12) across Georgia are invited to apply for the online at: www.ymcayag.org/ga
- Please feel free to share our Youth Cabinet Flyer (Click Here for PDF) with your colleagues and student community.
Youth Advocate Program
In addition to our Youth Cabinet, all students who apply for cabinet positions are also eligible to apply for our YMCA Youth Advocate Program, which brings two students per state to Washington, D.C. from February 12-15, 2023, to advocate for policy issues in our three areas of impact: youth development, health living, and social responsibility.
- The Youth Advocate Program application (open to cabinet applicants in grades 9-12) can be found at www.ymcayag.org/yap
- Please feel free to share our program flyer (click for PDF) and promo spotlight (YouTube).
Both applications are due by Friday, October 14th, 2022.
If you or your interested students have any questions about either application, please feel free to reach out to Georgia Youth Governor Benjamin Scott (contact info on www.ymcayag.org/ga) or send me an email at derek.summerville@ymca.net.

Counselor's Corner
Dear Seniors and Parents:
Welcome Back! Senior year is finally here. The counselors will be working with each senior individually to plan for post-secondary options. This year seniors will be utilizing the Naviance platform.
"Naviance is a comprehensive college and career readiness solution that helps districts and schools align student strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life."
Students will login to Naviance through their classlink and use the Naviance platform to upload documents such as transcripts, letters of recommendations, and all documents needed for the Common Application. Counselors will have individual meetings with each senior from August - October to explain how to login and use the site and to plan for after high school. Each senior will receive:
a transcript
HOPE GPA including HOPE rigor courses
discuss the college application process
scholarships
financial aid
HOPE GPA's are available through the student's gafutures.org account. Remember, the HOPE GPA is NOT on the student's transcript.
Some colleges require recommendation letters. Please review the college admission requirements to identify whether or not your college requires recommendations. Not all colleges require them. Please only prepare the documents the college requests. Any senior who needs a recommendation letter will need to complete the Senior Brag Sheet. This helps the teachers and counselors write the best letter of recommendation possible. The Brag Sheet can be found on the School Counselor Course in the student's Schoology page. Click on SCHS Counseling, then click on the "brag sheet" and you will be prompted to "make a copy". It will be forever saved in your google drive. Complete the brag sheet and share it with any teacher or counselor. Always ask the teachers if they would be willing to write a letter for you before sharing the brag sheet with them. It is also a nice gesture to write a short thank you note thanking them. Please give teachers and counselors 3 weeks to write a letter for you.
We will offer Patriot Time on Wednesdays after school in the counseling office starting in September for questions or assistance with the college application process.
We look forward to guiding you in the this next step of life. This will be an exciting year.

SCHS Student Opportunity for Women in Engineering
ECC is designed to give high school girls knowledge and information about the eleven engineering disciplines offered at Georgia Tech to help them decide if they'd like to study engineering in college, and, if so, which type of engineering is best for them.
This year's ECC will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022 from 8:30AM to 4:00PM in Georgia Tech’s Klaus Advanced Computing Building.
Over the course of a day, prospective female students have the opportunity to hear directly from Georgia Tech's world-renowned faculty and current Tech students about the various engineering majors offered at GT. In addition, attendees have the chance to meet with a GT Admissions Counselor to find out about the admissions process and the academic requirements necessary to be successful in the engineering undergraduate programs.
The non-refundable registration fee for ECC is $40, which covers all materials as well as breakfast and lunch for all attendees of the program.
The application link may be found here. There is also a QR code in the attached flyer for students! Thank you for your time and assistance in disseminating this information to your students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

The Campus Parent portal is your source for student and family records, including household and individual contact information, attendance, school-based fees, academic planning (high school), forms, and report cards. The Parent portal also provides access to the GaDOE SLDS Portal. Please set up the parent Infinite Campus account first. The same username will be shared with Schoology to set up your parent account in Schoology. Because each login reflects the person associated with the username, it is recommended that a separate account is created for each parent.
- Usernames can be comprised of letters, numbers, the underscore, and dash.
- Please refrain from creating a username that is all numbers, as that will interfere with student data here in our district.
- After completing the setup of your parent portal account, please allow 24 hours for your new account information to be sent to Schoology before attempting to log into your Schoology parent account.
