Dear Andrews Family,
What a phenomenal week of learning at Andrews! It was wonderful to see our students so actively engaged! We also celebrated College Week and are immensely grateful for all of the parents who volunteered to talk about their career with classes of students. You made such a positive impact!
We hope that you and your family enjoy a great three-day weekend, and we look forward to our students' return on Tuesday, January 16th!

Come celebrate the diversity of our Andrews Eagles with food, cultural displays and performances, including singing by the 3rd graders and more! Join the fun! This is an amazing event thanks to lots of participation from parents and students. We would love kids and parents to help in the following areas:
- Flags and Fashions Parade – Encourage your child to wear traditional clothes and carry a flag in the opening parade
- Cultural Booths & Food Sampling – Parents can organize and host a booth highlighting aspects of your culture. You can make it as simple or fancy as you’d like. Many parents create a display board with pictures and fun facts, and bring artifacts such as artwork, crafts, textiles, instruments, books, etc. to showcase. This can also include loaning cultural display items, donating purchased food/snacks for sampling to share with our children, providing cultural crafts and giveaways for students, or anything else representing your culture that is school appropriate. Many people will join together to create a larger display, such as for India and China. We encourage as many countries as possible to join!
- Past countries have included Sweden, Denmark, Germany, England, Ireland, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, China, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan. Our current Andrews community also includes families with origins from countries such as France, Greece, Australia, Armenia, Puerto Rico, etc. It would be wonderful to have all the countries that make up our Andrews family represented.
- Volunteer – Help the PTA Diversity Committee with coordinating based on your areas of interest and availability before the event, on the day of with set-up, monitoring booths and food tables, and clean up.
- Please complete the form your will receive in your child's backpack this week and return to your teacher by next Tuesday, January 16. You may also email the information, and any questions to Deepa Kamath @ deepa.kamath.m@gmail.com

Tuneful Tuesdays
Please share your talent with Andrews students as they come to school in the mornings. Find the piano outside of the library around 7:25AM and perform starting at 7:30AM. If you have another instrument to play (such as a violin), there will also be a music stand for you to use.
If you only have one song prepared you can play it once or repeat it. If you have a lot of music to perform, you may play more. Just make sure you are leaving the hallway for your classroom before 7:40AM.
Please sign up only one time. Looking forward to hearing you!

Health and Safety Newsletter
Often times, we overlook safety issues in our homes because we feel that it is a safe and comfortable place. However, there are many hazards that are neglected at home that have a huge impact on everyone’s health and safety. Home injuries are a leading source of accidental death in children and can be preventable when we follow these guidelines:
-Medications are the leading cause of child poisoning. Keep all medications and vitamins out of the reach of children. Children are curious and often think that medicines are candy.
-Items in your kitchen such as knives and scissors should be out of reach of children.
Make sure cleaning products are not stored under the kitchen sink, but in a safe place where children cannot get them.
Make sure pot handles are pointed to the back of the stove when cooking and use back burners as much as possible.
-Children under 5 are at a higher risk for choking.
- Children under 5 should not eat small, round, or hard foods such as hot dogs, cheese sticks, grapes, marshmallows or popcorn.
- Toys for children under 3 should not fit through a toilet paper roll.
- Keep small button batteries and magnets off limits to children as they will cause serious stomach and intestinal problems.
- Keep cords and strings, including those attached to window blinds, away from children’s reach.
- A leading cause of childhood choking and death is choking on balloons.
Internet Safety
Children should never give out their personal information such as full name, address, phone number or school name in chat rooms or on bulletin boards. Children should never send a picture of themselves without talking to their parents first.
Fire Prevention
Children are curious about fire. Teaching them about the hazards of playing with matches and other flammable materials, as well as practicing a fire escape plan with your family, can help prevent accidents and injuries.
Top Safety Tips
- Working smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a fire by nearly 50 percent. They are the first step for staying safe, but in order to be effective, they have to be working properly. For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleep area.
- Consider installing a smoke alarm that has a 10-year battery.
- Teach kids to never play with matches, lighters, or fireworks.
- Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, and always blow them out when you leave the room or go to sleep. Teach older children not to use candles in their bedrooms unless supervised.
- Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and make sure you know how it works.
- Children should know how to respond to the sound of a smoke alarm. Teach them to get low and get out when they hear it. A child who is coached properly ahead of time will have a better chance to be safe.
- Practice feeling the door, doorknob, and cracks around the door with the back of your hand to check to see if it is hot. Help your children practice this step.
- Together with your family plan and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of your house in case of a fire. It is important to have an alternate exit in case one is blocked fire. Make sure to choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away from your home.
- If you cannot safely escape your home or apartment, keep smoke out of the room by covering vents and cracks around the door and call 911 as quickly as possible. Then signal through the window with a light colored cloth or flashlight.
- To prevent possible fires, avoid plugging several appliance cords into the same electrical outlet.
