PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Bonny Slope Families,
We felt the love last week as we celebrated Kindness as a school. Thanks to all the volunteers who made our Valentine’s parties sweet as well. Next week we will be celebrating Reading all week, concluding with a Book Character Spirit Day on Thursday, March 2 and Bobcat Spirit Day on Friday, March 3. To kick off the week, reading will be the topic of Friday’s Principal Chat from 11:30-12:30 on zoom. We’ll host the zoom even if there is a weather delay or cancellation.
Right now there are two ways families can give input on upcoming district-wide decisions. The first is by watching the BSD Budget video and completing the budget survey. This feedback will be used to develop next year’s budget. The second topic we are seeking feedback on is the expansion of Dual Language programs at the elementary school level. Use the BSD Engage platform to share your thoughts on the future of elementary language programs in BSD.
Finally, I’d like to personally invite you all to the fourth annual BSD Community Conversations Around Race from 4:30-6:30pm on March 8th at Southridge High School. This listening and learning session is open to all BSD staff, parents and community members. If interested, please register for the event by March 7th.
I wish you all warmth and safety as we experience this Winter weather!
My Best,
Cary

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system in all Beaverton middle and high schools and includes an AVID elective class during the school day.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective class, taken in addition to the academic core classes (language arts, social studies, math, science) at your middle school. It's based on writing as a tool for learning, the inquiry method, reading, organization, and collaborative groups. The middle school’s AVID elective teacher is looking for up to 35 students to be enrolled next year and our school counselor Mrs Dyall is holding a workshop for interested students on Friday February 24th during school. If you would like your 5th grader to attend the workshop please email gillian_dyall@beaverton.k12.or.us or message her on parentsquare.
Students selected for the AVID elective are...
In the “academic middle” – meeting standards in all subject areas and passing standardized tests, but need a little extra support to do better
Needing help with study skills and organizational skills
Motivated to go to college
Willing to work hard and study every night
Historically underrepresented in 4-year universities (ex. first one in the family to attend college, students of color, or less resources at home)
Facing some circumstances that might make it difficult for them to actualize their college dream
Students must apply to be in the AVID elective class. If you are interested, please use this link to access the application form: https://bit.ly/BSDAVIDAPP and follow the instructions to also send the recommendation form to your teacher. For more specific information about the AVID elective class, contact your middle school. The AVID application is due March 10th, 2023.
Science Night is Back!
What is Science Night?
Science Night is back! This annual BSCO event is returning to Bonny Slope Elementary on Friday, March 17 from 6-8 PM. It’s a fun filled evening of hands-on science exploration and science projects including:
Maker Spaces
Presentations and Demonstrations by science exhibitors
Student Science Experiments and Engineering Designs
Is there an entrance fee?
Free admission! Students and families are welcome. This is not a drop off event. Students must be accompanied by an adult. This event is sponsored by BSCO.
Can my student create and present a science project?
Yes, all Bonny Slope Kindergarten thru 5th Graders can participate! Students can complete individually or in a group. Projects are done at home and brought to school to display at Science Night. This is a non-competitive Science Fair with the goal of encouraging kids to engage with science and have fun. There are two type of projects your student can choose from:
Science Experiment -or- 2. Engineering Design
Where can I find ideas for a Science Experiment or Engineering Design?
Visit the Science Night Google Folder. In the folder you will also find a detailed ‘How To’ document for creating a Science Experiment or Engineering Project.
Okay, my student has decided on a project, what do we do next?
First step, submit an entry form located in the Science Night Google folder.
Second step, obtain a display board. Boards will be provided free of charge to all interested students. Boards are available in the office (one per registration). We will also offer a board pick up time Friday, February 24 at school pick up (just in front of the school).
Third step, do the project at home, document the results and have fun!
Fourth step, bring your project board to school on Thursday, March 16. More details to come.
What happens on the night of the event, if my student does a project?
Project boards are displayed in the gym and students present their findings to designated volunteers. The volunteers provide positive written feedback and they ask simple questions.
What is your project about?
What did you learn?
What was your favorite part about your project?
Grade Level presentation time frames will be communicated before the event.
All students submitting a project will receive a participation prize and certificate.
If my student doesn’t create a project, can they still attend the event?
Absolutely, yes, please! We want your student to become excited about science by participating in the Maker Space and viewing Science Presentations and Demonstrations throughout the evening. By attending they will also be supporting their fellow classmates and may be inspired to create a project next year.
Where can I access the 2023 Google Drive for Science Night and what is in there?
You can find the site by clicking here: Science Night Google Site or scan the following QR to gain access to our registration forms, “how to files” and other pertinent information. Questions? Email sciencenight@bonnyslopebsco.orgTickets are on Sale now for Prom!
Purchase your tickets today to attend the Auction and Gala, the largest fundraiser and social event for BSE families and friends. Don’t miss the opportunity to bid on awesome packages and items such as date nights for a year at your favorite Portland restaurants, long weekend getaways to Black Butte, the Oregon Coast and Caldera, sports tickets, wine tours and tastings, kids summer camps, and more!
In addition to attending the event, you can also support BSE and our students through a sponsorship. We still have a number of sponsorship opportunities, starting as low as $150. Sponsorships help underwrite the expense of the event so that 100% of the proceeds raised that night directly support BSE.
