UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest takes place on February 22, 2020 at Aledo HS. ALL STUDENTS are required to learn a solo. Students will receive a schedule of when portions of their solos are due and will receive a test grade for each portion. Students who score 80 or above on their first 2 portions will be entered in UIL contest provided they are grade eligible. All other students will perform their solo the week of February 17 for a judge during their band class. Students who perform their solo at SHS will receive a grade based on your rating.

I = 100

II = 85

III = 70

IV = 50

V = 0

Students who perform a class I solo by memory and earn a 1st division rating at UIL will advance to State. Ensembles who perform a class 1 Ensemble and earn a division 1 rating at UIL will advance to state.

Students have begun selecting music. You are encouraged to select your music this week if you haven't already. You may use this link to search for approved music to be performed: https://www.uiltexas.org/pml/. All music must be approved by a director. If you choose music that we do not have, you are encouraged to order it yourself so that you can get it in over the holiday break and begin working on it. UIL entry deadline is January 24, so you need to begin working on your solo ASAP.

Ensembles must be approved by a director. Students may do an ensemble in addition to a solo, if approved. Ensembles will need to sign up for a time to rehearse with a director weekly in order to be approved. Use the same link above to see the lists of approved ensembles.

We have file cabinets full of approved music, so if you choose something we do not own, you need to order it. The best website for this is: https://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/welcome.jsp.

Your solo grades will be the test grades for the 4th six weeks. Please take this seriously. This contest will provide you the opportunity for the most individual improvement throughout the year. This is also a very important part of selecting students who will receive leadership invitations for next year.
