UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest takes place on February 22, 2020 at Aledo HS. ALL STUDENTS are required to learn a solo. Students will receive a schedule of when portions of their solos are due and will receive a test grade for each portion. Students who score 80 or above on their first 2 portions will be entered in UIL contest provided they are grade eligible. All other students will perform their solo the week of February 17 for a judge during their band class. Students who perform their solo at SHS will receive a grade based on your rating.

I = 100

II = 85

III = 70

IV = 50

V = 0

Students who perform a class I solo by memory and earn a 1st division rating at UIL will advance to State. Ensembles who perform a class 1 Ensemble and earn a division 1 rating at UIL will advance to state.

Students have begun selecting music. You are encouraged to select your music this week if you haven't already. You may use this link to search for approved music to be performed: https://www.uiltexas.org/pml/. All music must be approved by a director. If you choose music that we do not have, you are encouraged to order it yourself so that you can get it in over the holiday break and begin working on it. UIL entry deadline is January 24, so you need to begin working on your solo ASAP.

Ensembles must be approved by a director. Students may do an ensemble in addition to a solo, if approved. Ensembles will need to sign up for a time to rehearse with a director weekly in order to be approved. Use the same link above to see the lists of approved ensembles.

We have file cabinets full of approved music, so if you choose something we do not own, you need to order it. The best website for this is: https://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/welcome.jsp.

Your solo grades will be the test grades for the 4th six weeks. Please take this seriously. This contest will provide you the opportunity for the most individual improvement throughout the year. This is also a very important part of selecting students who will receive leadership invitations for next year.

All-State/TFME Trip to San Antonio

Our All-State Band Members and Texas Future Music Educators Club (TFME) had a great trip to the Texas Music Educators Association's annual clinic/conference in San Antonio. Rebecca Johnson and Adam Johnson participated in approximately 15 hours of rehearsals with the All-State Band and performed a fantastic concert on Saturday morning at the Lila Cockrell Theater in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Their band was conducted by Eugene Corporon from the University of North Texas who is one of the premier conductors of wind bands in the world. We are very proud of Rebecca and Adam and the way they represented Springtown HS!

Our TFME students traveled to San Antonio on Friday morning to participate in workshop directed towards the TFME chapters across the state. Springtown HS had 31 total members of TFME represented at the conference. According to TMEA, there are approximately 1500 TFME members from across the state with SHS having one of the largest chapters.

Our students enjoyed a presentation by Mandy Harvey who was a finalist on the 12th season of America's Got Talent. Mandy lost her hearing at the age of 18 while majoring in vocal music education. She has a very inspirational story and several students took the opportunity to meet her after her presentation. You can see Mandy's audition from AGT HERE. Students also participated in college night where they had the opportunity to meet with music department faculty from over 100 colleges from across the United States. Finally, our TFME students attended the All-State Band and Choir Concerts with contained students from SHS.

Thank you to Lori Starkey and Susan Grippin for serving as chaperones for these students!!
