Summary of the Book

The setting of the book The Hunger Games is in the tattered country of Panem which is divided into 12 districts (13 in the beginning) and the Capitol. The districts are made up of poor people working like slaves to feed their families and the Capitol is a section where the rich live, working easily for the money they earn. During an annual tradition throughout Panem called the Reaping two people (a boy and a girl) are picked randomly from each district to attend the Hunger Games. The protagonist of the story is a girl named Katniss from district 12 who volenteers to take her sisters place during the Hunger Games after her sisters name had been drawn. As Katniss trains for the Hunger Games she starts to realize that the Capitol has been mistreating the people living in the districts. She begins to have the attitude of a rebel and begins to want to fight for the people, but her first objective is to survive the Hunger Games. During the Hunger Games Katniss uses her hunting skills and brains to survive until only one more fighter was left standing, another tribute from district 12 named Peeta. Peeta and Katniss both want to rebel against the Capitol so they make a plan to commit suicide if the Capitol doesn't let them both escape the arena, giving the people more power against the Capitol. The Capitol agreed and both Katniss and Peeta were known as victors of the 74th annual Hunger Games.
