Mass Readings for Sunday, October 18: Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In Matthew's Gospel Reading this weekend, Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees. At that time, the Pharisees (the church leaders) did not like Jesus and did not want the people to listen and follow Him. They were afraid they would lose their followers to Jesus and they could lose their jobs and money. However, no matter what the Pharisees said, it wasn’t working; people still believed Jesus.
In this Reading, the Pharisees specifically try to target and question Jesus with a trick question:
"Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”
That might not sound like a trick question to us, but Jesus knew exactly what was going on. The imperial tax meant that the Romans forcefully took money from the Jews for themselves. The Romans could do almost anything they wanted, and the Jews had to do everything they said or they were heavily punished.
Jesus did not respond to the Pharisees question with a Yes or No answer. Instead, He answered with:
"Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."
So Jesus’ answer was simple. He instructed them give Caesar what is his, and to give God what was God’s-above all things!
Activities for Family
Letters to Jesus!
We all have questions, but God has all the answers!
In this weekend's Gospel, Jesus was asked a difficult question from the Pharisees. This week, ask your child to think of a tough question of God that they want an answer to. Invite them to write a letter to God or Jesus asking Him that tough question.
If you would like to take this a step further, have your child click here to type their question on this form! During the following weeks, we will ask Pastor Ryan, Fr. Walter and Fr. Imre to help answer those questions and post them in upcoming Family Faith Newsletters!

Whether your children are about the receive these sacraments or not, as parents, it is our role to teach and model prayer to our children. The link below is a helpful handout for parents to reinforce and teach prayer to their children, especially as they are receiving these holy sacraments.
Uplift Video of the Week!
Friends in Unexpected Places
Before COVID, when travel meant going to an airport, waiting with no masks and no social distancing required, this video went viral showing the world how our differences can be embraced.
Sixteen month old Carter was waiting with her father at the airport, when she engaged in a "toddler conversation" with a stranger, John Wright. As described in this video, this child and business man, both of different backgrounds, generations, and race, become instant friends...and it's adorable to watch! As Carter's father explains, "Watching them in the moment, I couldn't help but think, different genders, different races, different generations, and the best of friends. This is the world I want for her."
