Big Ben

By Jacob

Big Ben is located in London, England. The clock tower is about 316 feet tall. There are a total of 290 steps to the clock-room. The clock rings on the quarter hour as well as on the hour.

There were two bells cast as the clock tower's hour bell. 16 tons was the weight of the bells. The bells were cast by John Warner and Son in 1856. Since the Clock Tower was not yet completed, the bell was hung temporarily in the Palace Yard. The tower was constructed between 1843 and 1858 as the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster.

On 1834 the Westminster Palace was burnt. The parliament officials decided that a tower with bells and a clock would be a new building to be built.

Big Ben is so popular because it is in the middle of London. You can't visit Big Ben, but it's free to view from all over London.
