Finishing Math Well
As the end of the school year approaches, it's always wise to review the grade level skills and concepts your child may still be struggling with in math.
Summertime is the perfect opportunity to assist your child in mastering his/her basic math facts. The NJ standards outline what students should know at the end of each grade level.
While there are many different concepts and skills that children in each grade level should know, below are some of the highlights listed by grade level.
- Kindergarten - Students should count to 100 by ones and tens, write the numbers from 0-20, count objects accurately, and add and subtract fluently within 5 (i.e. 2+3, 1+2, 5-1, 3-2, etc.).
- First grade - Students should add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. They should also be able to solve basic word problems.
- Second grade - Students should fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two numbers up to 10+10. They should also be able to solve word problems including two-step word problems.
- Third grade - Students should fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (eg.Knowing that 8x5=40, you would know that 40 divided by 5=8). By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two (one digit) numbers. Fractions are also a key concept in this grade.
