"The Boujee Rouge" Winter Formal Dance
Mark your calendars – this year’s winter formal dance is “The Boujee Rouge!”
The Boujee Rouge will be held on February 8th from 8pm-11pm at the Ashland Hills Hotel Ballroom. Tickets will go on sale on February 3rd during lunch and at the door for $10. All proceeds go to support National Honor Society scholarships for AHS students.
Dances are a great part of the high school experience. At AHS, our goal is to sponsor dances that are safe, inclusive and fun. We have been working closely with AHS staff, the AHS National Honor Society and Student Leadership throughout the fall to re-double our efforts and refine our strategies to provide dances that are positive experiences for all students.
Entrance to the dance will close at 9:30pm. If your student leaves the dance, they will not be allowed to re-enter. All students are required to show their Student ID at the door. If they plan to bring a guest from another school, they need to pick up a “Dance Guest” Form in the Main Office and have that form signed by an administrator at the guest’s school
Help us Help your Student! Be a Chaperone!
These events are not possible without your help! Adult involvement supports a positive dance experience. Chaperones supervise things like coat check, the dance floor, water stations, lounge area, game area, bathrooms, outside areas, and more. We will also have AHS administrators, and teacher staff at the dance. APD also lends a hand.
We need YOUR help! We are seeking volunteer chaperones for two shifts:
Early Shift: 7:30pm – 9:30pm
Late Shift: 9:30pm – 11:15pm
If you are interested, email Nora Godfrey (NHS Advisor) at nora.godfrey-dismuk@ashland.k12.or.us. Please include what shift you can do, two stations you’d like to work, and a contact phone number.
Can’t Chaperone But Want To Donate A Raffle Prize?
We need great prizes for kids, staff and even chaperones. If you can contribute, please email Nora Godfrey (NHS Advisor) at nora.godfrey-dismuk@ashland.k12.or.us.
Things to know about the dance:
Student Ally Program:
- In addition to adult support, we will have a group of welcoming and responsible National Honor Society students who have stepped up to be allies for peers and active bystanders. We go by the model: “Be BA’DASS” Be Aware, Decide to Act, Say Something. Allies will be available at the dance for students who would like to seek support from a peer and act as a liaison between students and chaperones. They will be seen wearing glowing necklaces.
Activities:
- Our dance will offer lots of fun activities such as corn hole, twister, jenga, karaoke and dance competitions between staff and students. And we will also offer students the chance to win a raffle announced at the dance. Our DJ will promote hydration and taking moments to cool off. It is rumored that Mr. Preskenis will show us his b-boy moves.
Education, Accountability and Kindness:
- The week before the dance, all students will watch a preparatory video created by our students in the National Honor Society to communicate clear expectations for the dance. Students will also sign a pledge at the time they purchase a ticket that focuses on positive citizenship and common expectations for the event. We encourage you as parents and guardians to review the pledge with your student and set expectations with them.
- When students purchase a ticket, they will be agreeing to hold themselves to AHS School rules: Act Responsibly, Show Integrity, and Have Respect.
- Students are responsible for holding themselves and their friends accountable for appropriate behavior.
TCB Lesson:
-
Students will view the preparatory video in their TCB class to inform them of the pledge, the Student Ally’s, and remind them of our expectations for behavior while at this event.
We are excited to support an inclusive, vibrant, connected, and joy-filled “Boujee Rouge!”
Teen Drug and Alcohol Harm Reduction in Ashland Schools - Tuesday, January 28
Teen Drug and Alcohol Harm Reduction in Ashland Schools” – an Encore Presentation for the Public!
This semester, students in Ms. Floren’s Community Action Projects class at AHS chose to investigate a problem in their community, analyze policies to address it, and promote the policy they deem to be most suitable. The problem this semester’s students chose to analyze was teen alcohol and substance abuse.
The group of Administrators, Counselors and members of the Drug and Alcohol Coalition that attended the initial presentation were so impressed that we have asked them to do an encore presentation for the general public on this important topic.
Please join us in the library on Tuesday, January 28th from 7:00-8:30pm to hear about the in-depth research they did and policy recommendations put forward by this outstanding group of seniors.
