There is NOTHING like that new library smell!
The staff and students at Stanley Middle School are beyond excited to be in our new school! The students love the two-story media center. Watching the students enter the building on the first day was an amazing experience that I will never forget.

Building Community in the Media Center
For quite a few years, I have opened the library at 7:15 for students to work on projects, homework, or just to study. When Chris Goodson came to load Minecraft (Educational version!) on the computers in the media lab for a sixth grade teacher’s science unit, I put the program to good use. Every morning, I have every computer full and some pairing up just to work and play. It is amazing to see all grade levels working together to build a village or a maze and play hide and seek. They have taught the Minecraft rookies, shared ideas and knowledge, and made new friends. I have seen kids who are typically loners with no friends suddenly have a group that has let them in and made them a part of a group possibly for the first time. It is loud, hectic, and amazing to see.

Hawks Nest STEAM Academy Becomes Google Augmented Reality Pilot School
At Hawks Nest STEAM Academy we applied and have been accepted to be a Google Augmented Reality Pilot school. Google will be visiting our school for professional development and our teachers are all being trained this month and will design lessons for next year to tie in the technology. Our students have been on various digital field trips using our Virtual Reality goggles and iPods through Google Expeditions. All grade levels have used the tools to extend reading content. The engagement has been phenomenal. We look forward to advancing towards the Augmented Reality shift as we learn and grow.
