Principal Notes
What a great week to be a STALLION!
If you had time to come to our parent meeting, I truly appreciate you giving your time. We had an awesome conversation and I think we have a better understanding of the community needs as well as the campus needs. I attached the summary below for the parents that could not make it and will not be able to have the make up meeting this Wednesday. We will go over the same information this Wednesday @ 5 PM in the cafeteria.
The summary of the meeting is that although we had a few challenges in recent weeks, 96% of our students do an EXCELLENT job at school! When the school becomes aware of students making bad decisions, we take action. Although we would like to, we can not control or police things that happen in the neighborhood. We can attempt to address them if they make it to the school, but we have no jurisdiction. This is where we need your help. We need you to be our eyes and ears and inform us of things happening in the neighborhood. Also, you are welcomed to come to the school and volunteer and help us with things such as:
Visit the campus
Volunteer
PTO
Metal Detectors
Hall Monitors
Conversations (What is going on in the neighborhoods)
Thanks for all that you do!
See you around the campus...
Remember, we are the Best school with the Best students and the Best faculty and staff. Good, Better, Best!!! Never let it rest, until your good gets better and your better gets best!
Sincerely,
Leroy Bradley II

One School, One Book
Dear Parent/Guardian: This month our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book™. Every student will have access to the same book titled Fish in Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity. Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. Our 6th grade students will read the book with their ELA teachers and our 7th and 8th grade students will read it with their electives teachers. However, all students will have access to additional copies in the library, which they may check out. With the One School, One Book™ program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, and even administrative staff will all be following along together. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home.

Use the weather to give your child practice working with negative numbers. Have her look online for temperatures around the world and use a line graph to plot the temperatures above and below zero. What’s the difference between the highest and lowest?

Pose questions to get your teen thinking critically. Each of you picks if you’re for or against a later start time for school. Take turns explaining your sides: “Kids could get more sleep.” “Sports practice would begin too late.” What other questions can you debate?

Suggest that your child evaluate his papers and projects after receiving a grade. Is he happy with his performance? What did he do well? How could he have done better? Learning from past performance can help him do better next time.

Encourage your family to exchange written messages from the heart today. You might write to your teen and tell her you admire her courage. She might write a letter to a sibling telling him she loves his sense of humor.

Does your teenager want to read books written for adults? Suggest that he do an online search for Alex Award winners. Every year, the American Library Association gives the award to 10 adult titles that have special appeal for ages 12-18.

Home-cooked meals are usually healthier than take-out foods. Save time and make it more convenient to eat at home by preparing double batches of recipes when you cook. You can serve one now and freeze the second for a night when you don’t have time to cook.

Abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs is a scary trend. They’re often easy to get, and kids may think they’re safer than street drugs. Let your teen know that taking any medication not prescribed for her is dangerous and can lead to addiction.

Investigating Careers - Coach Carter
For the next two and a half weeks, we will look at “Why We Work.” We all work to achieve the things we need and want in life, from shelter and transportation to respect and pride.
Today’s youth need to understand this more so in this generation than ever before simply because they think that they are entitled to the things in life that they haven’t worked for. So as educators, parents and other educational leaders, we need to do our best to motivate these young people to understand the seriousness of an education and the value of work.
Journalism - Ms. Mark
The journalism students are creating a biography of who they believe is the most influential person of their generation. They are in the beginning stages of researching their person, and will soon advance to creating a slide show and video of their most influential person.

Our junior robotic engineers are working with the LEGO EV3 Space Challenge. This provides students the opportunities to explore and create innovative solutions for current space exploration topics.
We are currently working on Challenge #4 where students create an attachment to the robot to deploy a satellite.
