Terra Linda Tiger Tale
October 15, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
Thank you for making the effort to stop by Terra Linda each week during our Grab & Go events! This week students received PE supplies in their bags. This was made possible by our PTC who recently voted to pay for at-home PE supplies so that every one of our students could have the same PE supplies. PE supplies will continue to be distributed throughout the year as needed for each PE unit. Thank you PTC!
The PTC also recently voted to pay for the white boards, markers, and erasers that every one of our students received during our Meet & Greet events before the first day of school. In addition, the PTC voted to pay for the book bags with a zipper and handle that we are using for Grab & Go events. Because of this support, every Terra Linda student has the same white board to use during their Zoom sessions, and we are able to use nicer book bags - much better than the plastic ones we started with! Thank you to the PTC for helping provide equitable access to supplies for our students!
On Monday this week, we sent out a Terra Linda Library to Go message explaining four different ways students can access books from the Terra Linda Library. Here it is again: https://www.smore.com/df0zw I've also provided the link below.
Be sure to check out the Student Study Corner article below. Let us know if you would like a set of supplies!
Current fifth grade families are encouraged to attend our Middle School Options Information Night on Monday, October 26 from 6:30-7:00pm. Students from other grades are welcome to attend as well. Our school counselor, Britta McCarter, will share an overview of the different options, explain the application process, and provide time for questions. The purpose of the evening is to help families decide if they want to attend any of the Open House information nights (via Zoom) that will be offered at each of the Options schools. You can also click here for more information about BSD Options.
All parents/guardians are invited to attend any of the Principal Chats scheduled throughout the school year. I start each chat by sharing a few updates. Parents/Guardians then have an opportunity to ask questions. All Principal Chats will be on Zoom this year using this Zoom information:

Grab & Go Updates
We are doing our best to communicate what is available at each Grab & Go event. Sometimes we know details in advance of each Tiger Tale, and sometimes we add items after the Tiger Tale is published. In general, teachers will be communicating what supplies (if any) are available each week. We will try to send reminders by School Messenger as well.

Tuesdays are now reserved for students in Grades 3-5 to pick up any supplies that teachers want you to pick up. If you reserve library books or fill out the Google Form to request a book bundle by Monday, you can pick them up on Tuesday.Thursdays

Students are invited to click on this Google Form and send in suggestions for names. Students will then have a chance to vote for their top three favorite names from all of the names submitted, and then students will have a chance to vote for their favorite name from the top three names.
Here is the schedule we will follow:

- 10/29-11/5 Students vote for their top choice out of 3 names
- Friday, 11/6 We will announce our Tiger's name!

Student Study Corner
A Study Corner is your child’s very own space dedicated for learning. It has many benefits! The Study Corner system supports children with the organization of materials and important information. It limits distractions during distance learning and improves focus. It gives your child their own personalized space for engaging in distance learning and sets your child up for a successful year. And it can also be easily folded away at the end of the learning time each day to save space and clutter.
We have included an image of what a Study Corner might look like. Terra Linda is supplying the basic materials needed to create this system, which includes:
- trifold board
- binder clips
- hook to hang headphones
- sheet protectors to display items such as daily schedule, Zones of Regulation, or other student-selected items
There are many ways for your child to set up and use the Study Corner. The Visual schedule and Zones of Regulation Templates can also be a great tool to provide supports and structure too. Please involve your child, even let him/her take the lead, be creative and have fun!
Please fill out the information in the form request below and you will be notified when your supplies are ready for pick up. If you would like to request a study corner kit for multiple children, please submit one form for each child.

TAG Nomination Process (Repeat)
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to our office at Terra Linda. You can drop it off during any of our Grab & Go events, you can send it by mail, or you can send it as an attachment in an email to elizabeth_sarles@beaverton.k12.or.us
