Weathering the Elements
In a unit on weathering, fourth-graders experimented with how the outdoor elements like acid rain, freezing water, or temperature changes can affect rocks. They studied sandstone, limestone, marble, and basalt. In a recent experiment, they applied vinegar to the rock.
Along the way, the students applied the scientific method steps of making observations, asking questions, forming a hypothesis, making a prediction based on the hypothesis, and testing the prediction.
“Our fourth-grade weathering unit allows for hands-on learning opportunities. These real-world experiences provide an engaging learning environment in which they can work together while developing their critical thinking skills,” said Teacher Tara Drazner.
