OMS Celebrates Black History Month

Each day this month, the OMS Knightly News team chose one prominent African-American from history and highlighted their contribution to the world. Students were able to research major accomplishments and focus on the importance of each person as we celebrated Black History Month. The Students also created small posters to display in the main lobby for students to read and reflect on.

Martin Luther King Jr.

As you all know… January 15 was Martin Luther King Jr Day! Some people think that it is just another day off of school, but… it really isn’t. This is a day to celebrate an incredible man who changed the world with a kind heart. He helped show people that everyone deserves to be treated as equal. He went against racism even though he knew it was against the law (though it shouldn’t have been a law). He stood up for what he believed in and fought for it.He was a leader and he is truly a hero.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born Michael Luther King Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. He later changed his name to Martin Luther King Jr. In his early life, he sang in the church choir. His family was really religious and in church all the time. King’s father was an American Baptist pastor and was an early figure for the Civil Rights Movement. Along with Martin, he had two other children. Out of the three children, Martin was the middle child to an older sister and a younger brother.

When Martin was still young, he befriended a white boy about his age. His father owned a big business by the King’s house. Later, his father didn’t like that his son was playing with a black boy. He didn’t allow them to play together anymore and Martin lost his friend.

At the age of six, Martin Luther King started school. He attended segregated public schools in Georgia. He graduated high school at fifteen. After, he applied for Boston University and got a degree in 1955.

I am sure many of you know the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This is one of the many things Martin Luther King is famous for. During times of segregation, buses were segregated too. The rule was that if the bus was crowded, a black person must give up their seat for a white person. Rosa Parks did the exact opposite.She refused to give up her seat to a white man and got arrested.

After, Martin got an idea. Busses made money off of driving people, right? So, Martin Luther King Jr. got black people and many white people to boycott the buses for almost a year. It started on December 5, 1955 and ended on December 20, 1956. The bus drivers finally gave in after a year because they weren’t making enough money. So, the buses weren’t segregated anymore. It was an amazing movement.

And do you remember the March on Washington in 1963? Where he gave his most famous, I Have a Dream Speech? Now you remember. More than 250,000 people walked, all fighting against racism. At the end of the march, Martin Luther King Jr gave his I Have a Dream Speech.

He really changed the face of the earth with his acts against racism. We honor him on January 15 to say thank you to him. We can also use February as Black History Month as a time to reflect on his life and impact on today’s world.If King never did what he did, segregation could still be around now in the U.S.A. We are thankful and grateful that all people are respected no matter what color skin they have.

Teacher Spotlight

Emilia Lada conducted an interview with Mrs. Dailey, here is what she learned.

Emilia: What subject and grade level do you teach?

Mrs. Dailey: 6th Grade Social Studies

Emilia: How long have you worked at OMS?

Mrs. Dailey: I have worked here for 16 years.

Emilia: Were you a teacher before you worked here? If so, where?

Mrs. Dailey: Yes, I taught at the Juvenile lock up facility.

Emilia: What made you decide to become a teacher?

Mrs. Dailey: BSU was looking for students to start a new middle school program so I decided to join.

Emilia: What did you want to be when you grew up?

Mrs. Dailey: I always wanted to be a veterinarian, I love animals.

Emilia: What are some of your hobbies?

Mrs. Dailey: I love reading, baking, and designing homes.

Emilia: Do you worry about anything when you are teaching?

Mrs. Dailey: No

Emilia: Did you ever have any second thoughts about teaching?

Mrs. Dailey: On a good day, No. : )

Emilia: What are some of your pet peeves?

Mrs. Dailey: I do not love when people talk over me, when people do not use blinkers while they are driving, and when students or other people repeatedly tap pencils.

Emilia: How would you describe your style of teaching?

Mrs. Dailey: I use visuals for students to see information, I love to share ideas with students and have students share ideas with each other, and I try to explain things very clearly.

Emilia: What college(s) did you go to?

Mrs. Dailey: Umass Dartmouth, Bridgewater State University, and ISC.

Emilia: If you could be anything else besides a teacher, what would you be?

Mrs. Dailey: A home designer.

Emilia: What is your favorite food?

Mrs. Dailey: Ice Cream!!!

Emilia: What is the best piece of advice you could give the students at OMS?

Mrs. Dailey: Be respectful to everyone and do your best.

Student Corner

Each month we will pose a question that our student body may struggle with. The questions will be answered anonymously by students in the hopes that we can give advice and information on how to navigate OMS effectively.

Question of the Month: What can we do if we know someone is bullying/being bullied by another student?

Anonymous 6th grader- If I knew someone was being bullied, I would try to talk to them to let them know they don't deserve it and that they should go talk to guidance or another adult. I would help them go and talk to them about it if they wanted me to. I would try really hard to be the persons friend who is being bullied so that they know they matter and people care about them.

Anonymous 7th grader- I would tell the person who is bullying to stop and if they didn't, I would report them to an adult in school. No one should be bullied and the person bullied doesn't always speak up. I would take the responsibility and speak up for them.

Anonymous 8th grader- I think that sometimes bullying happens and the bully doesn't realize he/she is bullying. They might think it is funny or a joke or game, but another person may really be getting hurt by it. I would ask the bully if they were intending to hurt other people and if they were, I would report them to the school. If they were not trying to hurt anyone, I would try to make them see that they are hurting people and they would hopefully stop the bullying behavior.

Anonymous Staff member- First and foremost, students should get an adult involved. Find a trusted teacher, administrator, or other staff member to tell at school or relay the information to a family member at home. We take this very seriously and we will immediately step in to try to fix the situation. You can also help by trying to talk to the students involved. Being clear about how as a community we will not stand for bullying and telling a victim of bullying that it is not their fault are good things to do. Be a friend, by an up stander, and help out our community by holding everyone accountable for our values. Saying nice things to our peers is always a good way to remind someone that we care about them and value them for exactly who they are.

Curriculum Focus- Bungee Jump Math

Students in Mr. Pruddens 8th grade math class had to calculate the length of the bungee cord using scatter plots. They attached the cord to a stuffed animal and had the animal bungee jump from the second floor to the ground floor. Students had one chance to get the calculations right or their stuffed animal was in grave danger...

Curriculum Spotlight- Scale Models

This month in 7th grade STEM, students created scale models of an everyday item. Students had to find an object that is recognizable and calculate the volume from the dimensions of the object. Students then chose a scale factor to change the original object by and created new dimensions and a new volume. Using their STEM skills, students created a scale model and then designed it to look exactly like the original.

Stoughton Talent Showcase

The Stoughton Talent Showcase was a huge success. There were so many amazingly talented students who performed. It showed what we already know, that OMS has the most talented students in the world. Congrats to everyone who participated in the show!

If you are interested in writing, the OMS Scoop is a great club for you to join. We are also looking for photographers. You do not need to be a writer to join the Scoop.
