What's New In C2
October 2 - October 13
Literacy
We will continue our study of folktales by reading fairy tales, tall tales, and American legends.
We will be learning many different skills through folktales.
Fables include stories such as The Tortoise and The Hare, The Lion and The Mouse, and The Ant and The Grasshopper. Our focus through teaching these fables is for learners to be able to recount/retell the fable to determine their central message or moral.
Fairy tales include stories such as Cinderella, Goldilocks, and The Three Little pigs. We will focus on various skills such as compare and contrast, 5 w's and how, story elements, and the elements of a fairy tale.
Tall Tales will include stories such Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, Annie Oakley, and Slue Foot Sue. We will focus on elements of a tall tale including exaggerations, why we still tell them today, and how they relate to the cultural history of the United States.
Coming up in the next couple of weeks, second graders will be learning how to determine point of view when reading fictional stories. They will also learn how to speak in different voices for different characters.
We will also be doing a deeper study of vocabulary and will be learning how to use glossaries and dictionaries. We will celebrate our learning on October 31 with a Vocabulary Parade (more info coming soon from your lead learner).
