Pancakes, Stories, and Truth
"In seeking truth you have to get both sides of a story."
-Walter Cronkite
One of the most respected news men in American Broadcast History had a habit of just saying it straight without a lot of fluff. This quote is representative of that. It also reminds me of something my grandmother used to say, "A pancake might be flat, but it has two sides to it." She would use this quote to settle the occasional family dispute that might erupt among siblings, cousins, etc. She would then sit patiently and listen...she would only pass judgement when she had heard both sides of the story. We would live with her decision because even though we might not have understood it at a young age, there was a certain fairness and equality to it that we could not ignore. Oftentimes we as educators are presented with one side of a story. It may be the outward appearance of a student, it may be what we think we know about them outside of school, it might even be their past behavior in school. Regardless of that story, we look past it to the other side. We look for the student we can motivate and cultivate and hopefully someday convince to be as open-minded as we must be to educate the future of our nation. We are working hard to help our students so that everything they encounter is like a pancake and in order to find the truth, they have to get both sides of the story, and for that, I thank you!
