New Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Effective School Library Toolkit
There is a new toolkit available for School Administrators and District Leaders. The Michigan Department of Education Effective School Library Toolkit for Administrators was developed with the intent to provide administrators with information about the components of effective school libraries in order to expand our students' access to such programs. You can find the toolkit at: http://bit.ly/SLAtoolkit. Please share this document widely.
Digital Citizenship: One of the Hottest Edtech Trends!
ISTE reports that Digital Citizenship has been one of the top 9 hottest topics in edtech.
https://www.iste.org/explore/articleDetail?articleid=674
The focus of Digital Citizenship education is moving away from just warning students about online risks toward teaching them about how to use technology, the Internet, and social media in positive ways.
Digital Citizenship is taught by school librarians, but everyone in the school community needs to learn about and promote positive digital citizenship with students.
To learn more about this, you will not want to miss Dr. Kristen Mattson's Workshop "Digital Citizenship in Action!" on March 20th from 1:00pm-4:30pm at Cobo Center. Please see the information below for details.
New Article: Ten Ways Teacher Librarians Improve Literacy in Schools
The article "Ten Ways Teacher Librarians Improve Literacy in Schools" (with links to underlying research study) is an important one for everyone in the school community to read. With the importance of literacy for all students and the "Read by Grade Three" Law beginning to hold students back a grade in the 2018-2019 school year, there is a sense of urgency for "Alls Hands on Deck" to improve our students' reading achievement. Teacher Librarians are an important team member in this work.
MACUL SIGLIB is sponsoring two workshops related to literacy:
1) Online Resources to Support the Literacy Essentials
2) Promoting STEM through Literature
The details of these workshops are found below.
Future Ready Librarian Facebook Page Now More Than 20,000 Members
Dr. Kristen Mattson is a member of the Future Ready Librarians leadership team. She initiated and now moderates the Future Ready Librarian Facebook Page. You will not want to miss her session "Future Ready Librarians: Leading Beyond the Library" on March 20, 8:30am-12:00pm at Cobo Center (see below for details).
Reminder: the Future Ready Librarian framework was updated this past summer. It now has the learner and literacy at the center. Literacy now touches all eight wedges of the Future Ready Librarian Framework as it is at the heart of what school librarians do. You can find the new framework at the Future Ready Library webpage.
Makers and Making in Schools!
Also, in this issue, educator Nick Provenzano, who will be co-presenting the Workshop "Designing or Renovating Your Makerspace" (see below for details), was interviewed about "Creating the "Maker Mentality."
The issue also included an article with a list of titles related to the Maker Movement - "Maker Movement Resource List." Judy Bowling and Kerry Guillano will be presenting a Workshop on connecting books and making on March 20 at Cobo Center. See below for detailed information.
