Pleasant Valley Staff Newsletter
Week of May 3, 2020
Our mission is to empower and inspire a community of lifelong learners and leaders.
Hopefully, April showers will bring us May flowers. I plan to pick up my lovely red geraniums from PSH next week. I ordered from the PCPTA Geranium Sale for the last two years, and I have been so pleased with their color and quality.
May 4th is the beginning of a special week. It's Teacher Appreciation Week! I wish we could have celebrated this in person all week long as you are the best staff any principal could wish for! We will celebrate in person when we are allowed to gather in a large group again!
There is a lot of important information to follow!
Preparing for the End of the Year Closure
Again, the building will be open for you during the next two weeks from Monday-Thursday 8-3 pm. This access is optional for you as many want to prepare rooms for the summer break, to remove personal items, and to organize students' items for parent pick up as parents will in the building the week of May 18th. If you have an assistant and they are willing and want to come in to help you, they are welcome too. Please use:
- the hand sanitizer on the door monitors desk when you enter.
- social distancing during any physical interactions when using any areas but especially in common areas such as hallways and the office.
- the right side of the hallway (including the one with the ramp).
- the main office door to enter and the side door, by my office for the exit.
- the stairway by the main entrance to go up and the stairway by the M-Z doors to go down.
- only the staff bathrooms by the cafe, teacher lounge or upstairs in Grady and Davies offices (the students' bathrooms will be CLOSED)
At least one administrator and a custodian will be in the building if you need assistance during the weeks of May 4th & May 11th:
- M- Karabavnovs
- T- Boka
- W- McKim
- Thurs- All admin
Please plan on turning in your keys, badges, and staff handbooks by the last day you plan to come in. We will use the honor system for staff to return these items in the Lobby. The items will be collected from the Lobb at the end of each day. Bring a pen to initial and date the 2019-20 Staff Turn-in Sheet to document what and when in each of the items was returned. We will also have this system in place those last two weeks, from 9-11 am from May 26th and May 27th and from 8-5 on May 28th and 8-3 on June 4th. If you do not feel safe to come in the building, then keep these items until we return for the next school year.
Teachers and staff will not have access to the building the week of May 18th, when parents will have access to the building.
Preparing for Student Belonging Pick up
We ask that you have students' belongings bagged (25 13-gal white trash bags will be in each of your classrooms) and labeled with names written clearly on each bag in black marker. Place labeled bags a line next to their lockers or close to your classroom door in alphabetical order. If items have already been bagged and put in lockers, that is okay. If students share a locker and you are not sure which items inside belong to, make sure that the locker is clearly labeled with both student's names and leave the items inside, and parents can pick out their child's personal belongings. All consumables workbooks need to go into the students' bags. We do not have room to store these, and we will be getting new ones next year.
Please have a note on your classroom door for directions of how students' belongings are organized and place your empty blue Recycle Bin in front of your classroom door and label it PV Library Book Returns.
ISs, Encore, and Title teachers, please let your general education teachers know if you have items to give back to students so that this can be coordinated so that ALL students' belongings are together. Doing this will make the process simple, quick, and safe for our parents to find their child's belongings. Your classrooms will be locked.
We will have a table set up for parents to pick up their school pictures and staff yearbooks (if those are in before the week of May 18th).
Classroom or Encore teachers that do not plan to come in to bag items, must respond to this email to me and copy your Encore teachers (if you are a general ed teacher) as well as Emily and Kira so that arrangements to gather your students' belongings can be made by someone other than you.
Parents will be informed that we will be donating or discarding items not picked with the exception of pictures or yearbooks. Those will be secured in the office until the next school year.
This is the schedule for student belonging pick up form 8 am - 3 pm:
- M 5.18 Students with the last name beginning with A-E
- T 5.19 Students with the last name beginning with F-L
- W 5.20 Students with the last name beginning with M-R
- Th 5.21 Students with the last name beginning with S-Z
Preparing for 2010-21 Class List and Promotional Forms (to replace Pink and Blue Cards) and information for K-Grade 3 teachers
By Monday, I will be sending out Google forms to grade-level teams (Traditional and STEM). Please fill the form out for each of your students by May 11th. If time allows, you will be able to start the process of making class lists by turning the Google Forms into Google Sheets the week of May 11th in TBTs. I will be sending directions for grouping by May 11th, including clustering our students with giftedness and EL special education as well as how many regular and inclusions for each grade level team.
We will continue this work the week of May 18th in TBTs. I foresee these begin completed for the office to enter by May 29th.

Fourth Quarter Grading
This information is from the email that Melisa Manco sent on 4.13.2020.
- Enter pass/fail assignments and grades for the 4th marking period. If you have already entered Marking Period 4 assignment grades that are not Pass or Fail, be aware that the parent will see that in HAC.
- The value of P is 100 and the value of F is 0. Your “grade” will still show in TAC as a Standard letter grade. If you enter 10 assignments and grade 6 at P and 4 at F, that student has earned a 60% and the grade “D” will show. That letter grade will remain until we begin processing report cards at the end of the year.
- In 4th marking period TAC, when you load from gradebook, that standard letter grade will load. DIS will then run a process to override all A-D grades to a P and F’s will remain. You do not need to do anything more.
- More detailed instructions will come at the end of the school year for 4th marking period grades for elementary and 4th marking period grades, final exams and final grades for middle and high schools.
- If you have any questions or concerns, let us know via a Help Desk ticket and we will promptly assist you.
- Click to view an instructional video regarding Pass/Fail grading for the 4th Marking period. https://drive.google.com/open?id=15uMeemqK7T5FUEVMT-wK7b-Pxff_vrhK.
Request for Student Check-in
This procedures has been RESET FOR THE MONTH OF MAY
This Form is for Teachers or Related Service Only:
If you have a student who you have not been able to engage during this Distance Learning Phase or a student/family you have concerns about and would like Administration or our Home Liaison to reach out to the family, please complete the following Google Form.
Criteria for a request of support should be two attempts (email, phone, Class Apps, etc.) to the family by the classroom teacher. Please allow 24- 48 hours between each contact to the student/ family. AGAIN THIS STARTS AGAIN FOR THE MONTH OF MAY! If a child will be receiving an "F" for Fail or is not engaged at all, we need to know and hold that parent accountable and make sure our learners are safe. We are on your team! We need you to communicate these concerns with us through this form, so we have all attempts documented!

Board Adopted Curriculum for 2020-21 K-5 SEL
The Board of Education has approved the K-5 SEL Curriculum Second Step. There are new kits and online access with an updated curriculum for implementation. This will be integrated into the Social Studies block. I believe these are still weekly lessons, but the language and strategies should be used throughout the building, including all structured and unstructured times (lunch/recess).
